A team of scientists has tracked down a genetic mutation that leads to blue eyes. The mutation occurred between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago, so before then, there were no blue eyes.
Wow! I never would have guessed that it came about so recently! as a frame of reference, the oldest pottery found on earth is around 15,000 years old. So it means that people in Asia had ceramics classes before people in Europe had blue eyes. But heck! Mitochondrial DNA is a heck of a lot more reliable than autosomal in its mutation rate, and that seems to be what they used. I'd like to check out the original article later when I have more time. Interesting!

"The question really is, 'Why did we go from having nobody on Earth with blue eyes 10,000 years ago to having 20 or 40 percent of Europeans having blue eyes now?" Hawks said. "This gene does something good for people. It makes them have more kids."
Hahaha!
