Do you mind if I answer that question with another question?

(How annoying is that?)

Almost certainly not Aspie, but certainly something like it

I annoyed people in highschool because my conversational style was either 1) I was giving monologues or 2) I was asking questions. There was no in-between.

(I'm sure there were other complications.)

I remember I joined a Sony video camera forum and I told everyone that Sony video cameras were defective because the camera makes video that flickers. Needless to say I got flamed and was called an idiot and i was called Rainman.

Ditto.

I try to not become an irritant, but when I start talking about things that are of interest to me, I think it starts becoming a problem.

If I try to fit in by going along with the topics of conversation others want to talk about, it doesn't go well.

Add in a compulsive need to be "right" about everything (I'm still working on it), and sooner or later I become an irritant.

Yes and that is why I am too afraid to ask questions these days.

I recently started a multipage flame war on another forum with what I thought was an innocent question.

Oh, it was talking about how people dress in public and someone said that wearing sweatpants at the mall showed disrespect and a lack of self-esteem, so I asked how one could read someone's mind based on what they're wearing, and things got pretty heated, with multiple citations about self-esteem and the like.

I think I also caused strife when I said I don't care about other people in the mall.

Anyway, I had my intelligence insulted some, and was told I wasn't really reading the posts. It's possible I misread things as directed at me because they happened to be answering questions I'd asked.

I guess I should elaborate. I ask too many questions. I don't automatically understand something that I am assumed to know (I think it's an NT thing). It makes people mad that they have to stop & explain things to me. Happens more often in RL, but it can happen online too. I also tend to talk about stuff I know ad nauseum vs trying to talk about stuff I am uncomfortable discussing or know little about...small talk for instance.
