I am NT as far as I know as I am not diagnosed with Aspergers. On saying that I sometimes suspect it. I am diagnosed with social anxiety and depression.

In regards to yawning...yes I yawn usually.

In regards to pointing I don't point to my face I point directly to where the food is on theirs lol. If I do point at my face (and sometimes I do both) I will point to my right. But the food is not on my face so I usually point to where the food is, which is on their face lol

Actually, I'm curious if to anyone else has this problem, but I have a lot of trouble trying to mirror someone's actions if they are facing towards me. If they are facing me and they lift their left arm, I will lift my right arm, not my left. If they are facing away from them, I have less trouble.

Also... for a long time, I had a lot of trouble figuring out which hand was my left and which was my right.

These two issues caused a lot of problems when I tried to learn martial arts and dance and other sports and was one of the reasons why I felt very "inept" at these sorts of physical activities.

Yes

It makes for a lot of fun when learning a new aerobics routine on dvd lololololol

I also still cant always tell which is my left and right hand...I have to think about it sometimes lol. It's advisable not to ask me for directions, especially if I am the passenger in a moving car and I need to tell you to turn left or right very quickly lol.

I sometimes yawn when someone else does, but not always. My cats sometimes do too.

I think I point to the opposite side, as a mirror.

And, I'm AS.

Diagnosed AS.

1. Sometimes.

2. I don't remember ever pointing it out on myself. If I do, I point on the person's face the way I see it (which probably isn't very precise to the other person, now that I think of it).

interesting! well, perhaps i am overthinking the role of mirror neurons once we are past the age of basic development.

self-identified as having AS.

hyperlexian wrote:

no. i don't think i've ever done that. i'm surprised to read so many people do. but sometimes when people smile i smile also.

hyperlexian wrote:

neither. i just tell them they have something on their face.

i think if i were to point i would mirror the thing on their face, as mentally swapping positions with the person to indicate would probably confuse me. if i'm showing someone where they have something stuck in their teeth i stick my finger into the space between my teeth that mirrors where they have something stuck.

Self-diagnosed Aspie.

1: I don't believe I yawn when others yawn. then again, maybe I just don't notice it.

2: I would always point to the left side of my face (not like a mirror). And it causes problems sometimes with people thinking I am using the mirror version and thinking they have something on their right side.

On a mostly-unrelated note, this forum needs a face-palm emoticon. Good ol' isn't always good enough.

I usually point to where it is on their face.

Self dx AS

1. I occassionally yawn when some else yawns but only if i'm already tired. I do notice my NT family members ALWAYS yawn when someone else no matter the time of day. I yawn alot during midday (nightowl with a confused body clock) and get yelled at all the time 'Look what you did!' as I set an entire room off yawning. Happens alot in waiting rooms too - like doing the wave at a ball game.

2. I usually point to their face first - which seems to confuse people. If they don't get it on the first try I'll mirror the same spot on my face to show them.

Just don't ask me to use left or right. No clue if that has any bearing here but you used left/right in the description and I needed to mentally juggle that until I could picture it correctly. I can't do left or right without looking at my writing hand. Any usage of left/right requires this. My usual line, after giving the incorrect direction - "No, your other right."
Somehow, it seems that left/right would be a function of mirror neurons in a way.

My head shrinker, school counselors, and some guy from Voc Rehab all believe that I have AS. I have no formal diagnosis as that costs large amounts of money.

1. I do not yawn when people yawn. I do sometimes yawn when I read the word yawn. I also yawn when I hear lions roar....

2. If someone has something on their face I either say "You have something on your face." and make various comments (no, not there. other side, higher up.) until they get it, try to remove it myself, or point to THEIR (usually using their hand to make it easier for them to get off) face. I never point to my own face because they don't have food on my face. They have food on their face.

Note: I don't know my left from my right with any consistency. I never say "on the left" or "on the right" because i am not usually sure which side it is. I just say "right there" or "over there". It's kind of sad...lol.

I think that maybe there is more than one way to approach the problem so there is more than an either/or answer.

But, the fact that you have gotten answers that don't conform to the question is telling in and of itself. Isn't it possible that if people don't point at all, but rather, use words and descriptions, it is potentially indicative of a lack of mirror neuron function? They are not just processing the 'side of the face' incorrectly but failing to address the mirror of themselves in another human being. Just a thought...

yes, that is a very good point, for sure. so many people seem to have non-standard responses here.

i got to thinking about mirror neurons and how differences in aspie and autie brains affects our social interactions. i have a couple of questions for both NTs and people with AS (please self-identify so we can see the trends). i am sure the scientists have already researched these things, but i am lazy to research it and i want to know YOUR experiences.

Wow, I never even thought of it before!
I have no idea if I yawn or not.
If someone has food on their face I tell them and if they get the wrong side of their face with a napkin, I just say "other side." I don't point to my face at all.
I am DXed with AS.

I point either at their face or at my LEFT. Then usually I have to explain what it means because if I point at my left they clean their right...
