Like a lot of others here, I taught myself to read. I was writing before kindergarten.

Do you mean printing or handwriting? I learned to print without stencils at six, and learned to handwrite (poorly) at eight. I still can't handwrite very well (or print for that matter, but my printing is better than my handwriting).

Could you spell at that age?

I was reading by the age of 3, so I assume I could write some words too. But being that I'm nearly 50, I really don't have a clear memory.

I think I was 8 or so - I wasn't slow, I was mute until 7 and teachers also used to leave me to it in class so they didn't teach me, I largely had to teach myself how to write thus why my handwriting and spelling were so much worse growing-up.

3/4 age -reading , and writing. I was not very good ,and was self taught.
My reading abilities were greatly improved when I began to read books(novels) aged 8/9.

1st grade was when we learned how to write in sentences. So around 6-7. In kindergarten I only learned how to write my name and the alphabet.

I'm not sure, I can't remember a time when I couldn't read/write.

I don't know if I ever did learn to write, the "right" way. I was always having to rewrite my elementry school hand writing drills becuase they were supposedly too "sloppy" for the teacher to read. It would hurt my arms up to my elbows to write but I was always told I was just being lazy. Stupid teachers.

I have no idea what age I officially learned to write, but before the age of one I was scribbling and drawing and experimenting on paper. I really loved the process of creating visual representations.

I needed alot of help as a young kid cause I was ratrher low functioning as a kid. I was held back in the 1st grade but learned to write and read about age 6.
before then I could mimic the letters but did not know that they meant anything.

I think I was 5. I didn't need that, but I really wanted to be able to write and read so my parents taught me to. It wasn't a good idea, since I had some problems in the 1st year of school hence that - I was used to read words as whole and had to syllabify in the school.

I also mainly had to teach myself. I learnt by copying printed text. My handwriting still looks like a messy version of printed text. I've been told that I begin some of my letter strokes from the wrong end, that I should learn to write more joined up, and that I'm too slow at writing. I'm always surprised that it bothers people that much!

Um... I put 9 because you didn't have an option for '17'...

Yeah it took me 17 years to learn to write a word so someone could read it
