I'm officially dx'd with Aspergers but I believe I have High functioing autism for two reasons:

* I'm not mild, I'm moderate
* I am sometimes non verbal.

I think aspergers suggests I'm mild, so I prefer autism.

I did put an option for 'Other' up on the pole, but it doesn't seem to be there for some reason :S

"Other" seems a bit pointless when you have HFA up there. Just be explicit. Anyway, the separation doesn't make a lot of sense - AS is basically HFA, PDD-NOS can be any functioning level, and autism can be any functioning level.

But the reason it didn't go up is because you have to explicitly add each poll option before posting. When you do post, the last poll entry field should be empty and all your options above it.

For the time being I assume I have AS with pronounced traits of inattentive type ADHD and some memory disorder along with learning difficulties, mainly verbal.

My autistic traits seem to be consistently less severe compared to what the majority of people have here (or it's just me being older?), except for communication, but chances are I meet the criteria of mild autism overall (currently AS, because of the absence of speech delay and a relative extroversion). I'm really keen on being evaluated professionally, I can hardly wait till its time comes...

Tenzin was diagnosed with Autistic Disorder at 3.

Last year, age 7, the developmental pediatrician said, " Call it HFA, PDD-NOS but it's not AS."

He has very poor verbal skills.

Why would AS imply good verbal skills? AS does not have delayed verbal development, but the cognitive delays that go with any kind of autism are not really inducive to good verbal skills... at least not in spoken form. The semantics of the AS / Autism definitions are so misleading because it refers to speech delays when there are actually two types involved:

1) Cognitive delays that affect speech understanding. This affects both AS and other forms of autism.

2) Delayed development of speech. This does not affect AS but DOES affect other forms of autism and is indeed part of the DSM definition, but the semantics of the DSM wording is so vague as to lead to confusion as it once did for me.

I really have Asperger's, but I tell everyone that I'm a really high functioning autistic because not everyone knows what Asperger's is.

As a child, I fit criteria for classic autism. Today, I've lost the odd speech and problems with conversations, so I can no longer be diagnosed with classic autism. I was initially diagnosed with AS, but with that history, PDD-NOS is the only category I still fit into.

I'm PDD-NOS - I am considered high functioning although of course it doesn't feel high functioning to me and I am disabled enough to get benefits so I don't see how that can mean I'm high functioning but anyway...

I was diagnosed with PDD-with classic autism traits, but now I am more aspergerish.
The only thing that failed me for the autism dx was the fact that I have a very overactive immagination and did engage in imaginary play as a kid.

I didn't vote on the poll, because I have Aspergers/ High- Functioning Autism. I couldn't really vote for just one! :)
I DEFINATELY find it easier to say "I have high- functioning Autism" than to say "I have Ass-Burger Syndrome". Honestly, I just NEVER pronounce it right.... :(

You can see my signature. A nerologist "I think it is" diagnosed me PDD-NOS. My parents think that I more likely has Aspergers, and my school considers me diagnosed as Autistic disorder/PDD. Yea, I know. Its a confusing history of diagnosis.

I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome when I was two. My mother somehow seemed to know that I was autistic from when I was only a week old. Don't ask me why, she just somehow knew. She had a really tough time trying to get a diagnosis. There were no children's hospitals in Colorado Springs back in the early 90's. My mother had to take me up to Denver to find somebody who would be willing to diagnose me. I was officially diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and ADHD in 1993. I've definitely got both Asperger's and ADHD.
