I need it much lower than anyone else I've watched TV with, and in fact, I can't hear it if it's more than just a very low level. At what others consider "normal" volume, all I hear is screeching and roaring, and I can't make out the words. And ontop of that, it causes me a type of pain and distraction, so I can't follow the visual part of the show either. I like some music louder, but that's something I don't do very often.

Yes I get this.

Oh. I hate ad-breaks, they have me hanging from the ceiling by my finger nails sometimes....

I know, the things advertisers do to get our attention....Actually I don't think they should be allowed to do this. :shameonyou:

I think it doesn't do you much good to have the TV on louder than what it needs to be on. My brother turns his TV up really loud in his bedroom, so you can hear that irritating sound of murmuring from any other room you're in. And I think it's silly, because his TV gets louder and louder as he gets older, which isn't really a good thing for anybody, because the louder you start having it, the louder you want it, until you end up having it so loud that it gets annoying for anyone. I think your ears get tuned into a loud volume, until a reasonably loud volume becomes too quiet for you, which doesn't actually do your listening skills much good, believe it or not.

The volume on my TV is actually quite high. Most people at first think that this is because I am hard of hearing, but that is not the case. I end up not being able to focus on the TV because these sounds seem so loud to me. I have my TV volume on now really high in my room so that I can focus more on the TV I want to watch and less on the surrounding stimuli.

That being said, however, if the TV is the background noise, even the very low volume disturbs me, and I have to shut it off. I hate background noise. If the TV is loud and it is not my TV or my show, I also find that very disturbing as well, and need the volume turned down.

same i watch it alot louder or go really close to it...but if im by myself then just normal cause i can hear it if no ones making other noise.

This is what I do with my television. I prefer to have subtitles or close captioning so I don't have to put as much effort into listening to the television (the difference between watching with and without subtitles is night and day for me, even when I understand everything I hear). I turn the volume up loud so the voices drown out everyone else.

What I dislike is that a lot of my TV watching is Netflix, and the Netflix version of subtitles are not typically synced to the dialogue, which is actually worse for me than no subtitles at all.

That and while I can watch Netflix through my XBox 360, it won't display subtitles anyway.

It's bad enough that I have sensitive hearing and noises that others consider quiet are incredibly loud to me and cause headaches and nausea, but I also live with my parents who are both borderline deaf and constantly have the living room TV way, way, way too loud. It's funny how NTs are so accustomed to everything in the world being so loud – on a regular basis, they'll try to carry on conversations with me while a loud TV plays in the background, and everyone in the world seems to be under the impression that you need to yell into a cell phone for the person on the other end to hear them.

I don't watch a lot of television or movies, but I do tend to like a volume significantly lower than most people. I feel anxious if the volume fluctuates and I can't turn it down right away, I get almost claustrophobic.
For whatever reason, when I concentrate on the screen, I won't be able to hear the sound. For this I always have the subtitles on so I can read and watch. If I want to hear what is going on, I have to look away from the screen.
It's just not that enjoyable when so many factors go into simply watching tv, lol.

to me; it's quite hard to have the tv (or any other sound-producing thing; also mp3 players, computers, radios...) at a comfortable level; they usually are set in 6-8% increments; and i'd want the volume at 3%, or 0.5/12...

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "set in 6-8% increments," aside from knowing that you're referring to the volume settings on a television or other device. Do you mean the preset increments by which the user controls the volume? Because those are usually adjustable in increments far smaller than 6-8% of the total volume, as otherwise there would only be around 14 possible settings. Or is there a 6-8% increase between any two volumes? Because that shouldn't effect your ability to reach your desired volume; one would only need to decrease the lowest volume.

I also keep my tv rather low, and instead have the subtitles on to compensate. Commercials can be especially torturous, blasting out of nowhere. So I too use the mute button often. I can't take noise well at all, unless I am in control over it. Anyone else? For example when I vacuum I can tolerate it but when someone else is vacuuming I can't.

Yes I'm the same way, and more than that ... if I'm at someone's house and they leave the television on during the commercials, it drives me nuts. I want to grab the remote and pound the "mute" button through the floor.

I agree when I go to my grandmas house she has the tv on loud because her hearing is not good but then she tries to talk in the commercials without turning them down and I have to grab the remote and mute it or I just cant hold a conversation with her.

When I listen to tv on my own I have it really quiet and if my family walk in the room they always say can we have the sound on please or are you listening to that because I cant hear it.

I also cant stand cinemas I think its because it feels like its inside my head and its usually so loud I cant hear the words properly, I dont know how people can enjoy noise that loud.

That's how I feel as well.

I need the TV LOUDER than my NT wife!
This is because I've lost part of my hearing over the years, from spending too much time with my almost deaf Mother! She has to have EVERYTHING blasting loud, and I've not recovered much of my own hearing since I've not spent as much time staying with her.
So I appear to have the opposite problem from many Aspies, here.... :?
