I said "cheese" when the photographers said to say "cheese". It was not a genuine smile. I do not genuinely smile for picture taking.

...kind of. You could've done a dental exam on me just by looking at those pictures. Took me some practicing in a mirror, but I think I've got it now. You've got to scrunch the corners of your eyes, and tighten the little muscles over your cheekbones, in order to make a smile look genuine. Practice in the mirror if you are tired of awkward looking pictures (or don't; there are many less-boring things to do!).

My childhood photo smile is almost painful to look at, it's so forced.

I always smiled in my school pictures, even though I was looking pale in them if I was unhappy in that particular school. :pale:
I have been told I have a nice smile, so I guess that puts me a bit ahead....?

I don't like smiling in photos in general.

Same here.
Probably because they were fake.
Any time I smile, it looks forced and awkward.
I hardly ever seem to genuinely laugh or smile.
And this is most certainly not for want of joyful or funny things in my life.
:D

I smiled in the official "Picture Day" photos. It was always the un-queued photographs where Im not smiling. In other words, if mommy told me "remember to smile", I would. :D

I smiled for all of my photos, even when I was younger. I have never had issues with that. :)

there is only 1 school photo where I am smiling, from 5th grade. I won't smile unless I have a reason to. I like it much better nowadays that people know I don't smile, so they always ask me why I am smiling when I do, unlike when I was a child they would ask me why I WASN'T smiling, which was very annoying, I always thought, "what is there to smile about?"

The last time my picture was taken, it took at least 10 times before I (by luck, I imagine) managed to put on a face that didn't look like the typical aspie blank stare.

I didn't start smiling in photographs until after the age of 5. None of my baby/toddler pictures show me smiling.

Never. I always looked pissed in pics. If I ever was as pissed as I looked it would probably be only because they were trying to force me to wear a fake smile. I have learned to look more or less normal when smiling in photos but it still makes me feel awkward so I'd rather not.

In my favorite early childhood photo I put in frames, I - at age 3 - am holding a teddy bear almost as big as myself and looking seriously pissed off. I have at least one photo from the start of elementary school and I look at the person taking the photo with a serious look on my face, with no smile, unlike the rest of kids. I also have three photos taken at school when I was a child (and some taken when I was a teen) - group photos and single ones too: in one taken when I was 7, I have a very artificial smile, a typical "photo" one which doesn't look natural at all, in one taken a year later I smile (delicately, without showing my teeth but this smile is very natural looking) and in one in which I'm 11, I have rather a neutral face.
