I always see the word in my head when I have to spell it and I have always been good at them. And most of the time looking at a new word and reading it out once is enough for me to learn it and its spellings. But when I think about how it should be spelled, I mostly always mess it up. Also when I have to check someone else's spellings, I mostly always have to first write the word down myself and then compare.

When I read, I look at the text and say it to myself in my mind. When I write, I say to myself what I'm thinking, and then I turn the sound into the symbols that you are reading right now. Spelling is really all memorization. If I happen to get something wrong, Firefox has a built in spell checker, so that isn't a problem.
