My son's pediatrician suggested we have genetic tests run on him at 1 yr of age when he was not really crawling much or attempting to walk. At the time autism really was not suspected, but they did test him for Fragile X which came back negative. They found nothing in the genetic testing to suggest anything wrong.

We also had an MRI done since my son was such a late walker (21 mos) and it also found nothing abnormal in his brain.

However, by the time my son was 2, we knew he was autistic.

Thanks for your help, everyone. I've talked to a lot of doctors and they say that the genetic tests (for the less common genes, so not including Fraxa or TS) are used to help direct treatment. But they can only identify known genes in 10-15% of cases so its' not clear how helpful they are so far.

If you're interested in reading my article when it comes out in a few months, let me know. Otherwise, best wishes to you all!

Well I am not sure if this is considered genetic testing but...starting when I was 7 I complained about some odd things can't even remember what and somehow it ended up with me getting a bunch of blood tests done, I am pretty sure I had a brain scan or something, and lots of other little tests......that went on a lot more when I was younger, the last thing when I was 18 is they took a small sample of my musle tissue(I have a little scar to prove it.) So they could further study it....they basically found nothing very specific but some weird things.......when I was 7 they suspected Muscular Dystrophy or something and well I don't have that, there was mention of a high level of CK enzymes(I don't even know what that is or would mean.) and other weird things that make no sense to anyone and do not seem to cause physical problems. So yeah basically there is something a bit weird that they have found signs of but I don't know what it relates to or if it has anything to do with me having AS or whatever.
