The results of your testing indicate that non-drug treatments dont work *for you*.

Again I would love to hear stories from people with ADHD that have used non-drug
treatments with good results. Again I read an ADHD forum site (larger than WP) and
the users reporting effectiveness in any non-drug treatments is quite rare.

Synaptol does not even come up in their search engine. When I say non-drugs treatments are unlikely to work I'm not basing that on my own use I'm basing it on
that there just are not effective non-drug treatments out there.

I would think Mark_42 doctor would know more than any of us if he rx Focalin as
a safe effective treatment I would give it a try.

Still to rule something out that hasnt been tested based solely on the fact other OTC treatments dont work is silly.

I dont know whether this stuff would help or not hence why I for one wont say it doesnt work.

As for other treatments you said yourself "the users reporting effectiveness in any non-drug treatments is quite rare" but does happen.

AS is a rare mutation but obviously since we are here low probability is not the same as impossible.

I remember a person (honest person i know on the net) suggested I try Pycnogenol
for ADHD. I did some research and there is a study in which it improved ADHD. I then
searched for it on the ADHD forum site. Found some old threads a few years old but no one mentioned it since. So I started a new thread to see what people thought. No one
had tried it but two people did as a result of the thread with negative results. That
tends to be the best example of non-drug treatments.

People give very mixed results for most things reported like fish oil for example. From
a legal stand point the makers of a product must prove it works to the FDA. If I say that Synpthol is useless unapproved treatment for ADHD I am speaking facts that the
makers of Synpthol could not deny. I'm sure the bottle has the:

"*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administartion. This product in not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease"

I'm sure you see all the amazing weightless products on TV.

Sure, but the burden of proof is on them to show it works. It's not someone elses responsibility to prove it doesn't work. They want you to spend your hard-earned money on it. People are coming up with new snake oils all the time that are nothing but marketing gimmicks rather than some kind of true scientific revelation. Are you going to spend money on each one of these just for the very remote off chance that it will do something? Knowing that, I would encourage people not to be gullible. If they're offering a large enough free sample to try it out before you give them money, then I say go for it if you want. I wouldn't even waste my time trying it; much less real money. My faith in them is that low.

To me it just seems like common sense that if they truly make a discovery of something that useful, they'll be able to prove it with scientific testing and get the support of the scientific community. A lot of people are being taken for a ride with these over-priced snake oils that are nothing but good marketing gimmicks. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Your still trying to see it as black and white it works all the time or not at all.

It could be sugar pills and still treat the symptoms for some people.

To tell people they have no other choice but to spend the rest of their lives taking an expensive prescription drug is to be closed minded and to rob them of the chance to see if they are a member of the minority with whom non-prescription treatments work.

Everyones different and have different metabolisms that react differently to everything.

And for some people snake oil works better than prescription meds simply because of a psychosematic reaction. If a drug works does it matter if there is a scientific basis for it working?

No, even prescription drugs don't work in a black and white way. They work better for some than others. We all react differently. Still, I would hope that people look for some studies that prove SOME effectiveness on SOME people at least. Snake oils like this offer up anecdotal evidence which is completely worthless. It's nuts to throw money at these scam artists without any such proof.

In my psychology 101 class (boy I sure do reference that a lot here), the professor admitted that the people who make SSRI drugs have no idea how they work. When you get on any kind of drug you have to sign that you understand, at least in a basic way, how the drug works (i.e., this drug attaches itself to bacteria and that makes them die), but when you do this to get on an SSRI drug, you simply are told that nobody is really sure how it works, although there are theories.

I agree when looking for solutions you should weigh the possiblities and find whats best for you through research as well as trial and error.

But to dismiss something that hasnt been proven to not work simply because they dont offer evidence that it does work isnt exactly fair.

Absense of proof does not automatically make something a lie.

Well you can allways stop a drug for other options. Your not locked into it. Not sure
the cost of typical ADHD stimulants but in the worst case it could be as high as
$150-200 for a office visit to a psychiatrist a month! Plus maybe as high as $3 day for
pill so thats up to $290 month in the worst case. That assuming you can only find a
psychiatrist to rx stimulants and you buy some expensive brand names.

If a drug like generic Wellbutrin worked you could get it easily from a GP or even online
like I have. Get a longer 90-180 day rx thus you could likely get it down to a dollar
a day.

For most extreme ADHD cases like myself I could easily make enough for the worst
case from increased work productivity.

See now thats the complete opposite from what you've been saying.. your stance has always been "dont bother trying anything else this specific stimulant is the only thing that works."

And whether or not you can afford it with "increased work productivity" is beside the point.. if I were making $300 a month more from my job by taking treatments and have to spend it all on buying the meds.. whats the point?

Thats true about not understanding how SSRI work. In fact SSRI are less effective at treating depression than stimulants are at treating ADHD.

ADHD as it turns out is much easier to understand than depression. And the drugs work
very quickly unlike the long delay in SSRI (ie the unknown secondary mechanism of their
action). The ADHD stimulants stimulate an area of the brain to be more alert (we are talking inattentive ADD now hyperactivity is another issue). An ADHD person would likely
be in a theta brain wave dream like state much of the day but with drugs the EEG
reads more beta like a non-ADHD person. They become more focus and get more
work done.

Well I say you can stop but I feel there are no other options worth trying in 2006.

Well in my case I would be making $3000 more a month than the current zero.

We have been udsing Synaptol only for a short time, and we are noticing a difference. Our son looked me in the eye for an entire conversation and did homework without nearly the usual fuss last night.
Synaptol does not contain xylitol. We use the liquid homeopathic.
