Does anyone else tend to walk really fast? I'm wondering if it is AS related. I tend to take wide, heavy-footed strides and I can reach a destination in about half the time that it would take for someone who walks at a normal pace. The weird thing is that it actually takes more effort for me to walk slower, which is why I prefer to walk alone.

Yes; I walk much faster than most people too, except when I'm carrying my 60lb backpack and everyone else is trying to go fast enough to get to their classes (usually with lighter loads because they have dorms and I don't), in which case I'm only faster than about half the people.

That happens to me every day on the way to class. T_T I am never able to finish my Coke. It took me forever to figure out why it tasted bad by the time I got to class. XD

yup; i'm a fast walker naturally; i dont see the use in walking slowly; that's a waste of time.
for example, if i'm in the grocery store with someone else, and we realise we forgot something at the beginning of the store, i just walk there at my natural pace, grab the object and return before the other person, at his normal pace, finished the isle we were at.
i dont run either, i just take high-paced, large steps

I walk really fast all the time. If I try to walk slower it just feels weird and unnatural and takes a lot more effort for me. People often stare at me for this (and my odd gait doesn't help), but I just can't seem to slow down. It feels uncomfortable and unnatural.

It's not only walking that I do faster than other people. I do many other things fast too and I often feel like I'm living my whole life is at a completely different pace than other people.

My natural speech is really fast, but I have to constantly put an effort into slowing my speech down, as otherwise people don't understand a word I'm saying or don't follow up. That's one of the reasons why I hate talking. I feel like I'm doing it in slow motion, but if I do it any faster people don't understand.

I also work a lot faster than others and I learn faster than others. Sometimes it gets kind of frustrating, because of course to me it feels like everyone else is slow and I constantly have to either wait for others to catch up or get a three times larger workload because I can get three times more work done than others can in the same time.

I used to walk really, really fast, but now I walk reasonably fast but not really fast. When I'm with other people I don't walk any faster or slower than them. If I walk too fast, I end up going out of rhythm and tripping up. I don't want to do that.

I don't think it's an Aspie thing though. My mum is NT and she walks really fast. I can never keep up with her.

I have two walking speeds - fast (too fast for most people) and slow (too slow for most people).

There is no inbetween.

I can't adjust to other people's speed if it's not one of my two speeds. If they are walking at some inbetween speed I'll keep with them by messing with with step lengths, rhythms, turning circles back on myself, walking backwards etc.

I don't know anyone who walks as fast as me and so I don't like walking anywhere with anyone else as it's a frustrating experience.

I actually only have met one person that always walks faster naturally. Yes, speed-walker here too.

tho i can sometimes really enjoy walking slow if i don't have a destination.

I do know of someone who actually walks faster than me. My 79-years-old chain-smoking tennis-playing Grandma. 8O

I also increase my pace when another person merges onto the same path as me (i.e we meet at a fork in the path and head along the same route) if they are walking fast as well.

To answer the original question, yes, I speed-walk everywhere. Dawdling just feels like a waste of time and is so boring.

I walk fast. I don't understand why some people, while being healthy, walk so slow. My mum walks slowly but that's understandable because she has arthritis. But I know people (usually women for some reason, and note that I myself am a woman) that walk so slow. My best friend (who also has AS) walks really fast. Faster than me.

I do this too. I also cannot stand walking directly behind someone, I need to have a 3 metre gap in front of me.
