There are people who think we're demons? Whoa, cool! :D

A misconception that has at least been applied to me is that I'm shy. I'm not. I actually like being spoken to, because it means I'm not invisible after all. People just look too outwardly boring to bother with trying to communicate to, which is why I gaze silently around the room while consumed with my thoughts.

I get highly offended when people call any people with disabilities ''alien''. I am fed up with being completely seperated from NTs and being made to feel the complete opposite, when I have the same thoughts, feelings, and emotions as any NT does. Just because I have a few difficulties with a few things, and obsessions, doesn't make me any less human than the next person.

"Asperger's Syndrome isn't autism, it is completely different from autism - you only have social difficulties, not other ones, so its not really like you're autistic"

It's really hard to get across while you're in recovery from an overload stage that, no, you do have issues besides just "social difficulties", because of being in the immediately after a minor meltdown... that one really bothered me.

There are too many to choose from!
The main point really though is that it's not an illness or disease - you will not be "contaminated" if you come within touching distance. We are not evil, we are not purposefully annoying or terrible people (usually) - it is simply the case of not knowing what some of the unwritten social rules and boundaries are in the so called "normal"* society, for some of us. If someone calls me an alien, I will call them an alien.

*No, I don't condone the use of the word normal to describe NTs, that's why I put it in quotation marks.

I am not sure if you meant it this way, but I absolutely detest it if people are talking about aspergers and then procliam that "everybody has a bit of aspergers in them" and then proceed to act as if we are making our problems up and portray us as some munchhausen cases... :x

^ This along side, oh well if you do have it, it's very mild........... How the heck do they think they know what's going on inside my head and how much something affects me!! !! I have struggled my whole life to have it finally verified with diagnosis followed by people dismissing it because I learned to hide it.

In fact, sensory issues are the biggest problem for many adult Aspies. And then there are the ADHD-like executive function issues (eg difficulty switching tasks), and then the emotional self-regulation issues (anger, anxiety), and - oh yeah - there are some social interaction problems, but by sometime in adulthood we often have learned a lot of skills that NTs do intuitively.

Sensory issues are by far my biggest problem, executive function difficulties, both positive and negatives with special interests, alexithymia, only being able to think analytically, the list of traits is solidly there.

As for other things that bug me,
-Autism is a male thing.
-If you're not diagnosed as a kid you're not really on the spectrum
-that AS traits are only anxiety (<- so much of that one, from people who should know better)

I haven't actually told anyone about the probability that I'm on the spectrum. I'm afraid that alot of people see autism as a "mental illness" . . . These are people who don't know the difference between a psychological and neurological disorder. That really bugs me (not that mental illness is something to look down on) there's a clear difference here, just because my brain works differently than a "neurotypical" brain doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with it!

Would you be surprised to learn that you are the one in the dark on this one?

I hate how many people on the net are now using autism as an insult, especially at 4chan. I come there for the memes and the often hilarious satire, but it irks me when they use the term "asspie" [sic] as an insult. There's also the prevailing belief that all autistics are like Chris-chan and are incapable of learning acceptable behaviours.

This misdiagnosis caused me significant stress, which lessened upon finding out the truth about myself from my current and past long-term therapists - that I am an anxious and highly sensitive person but do not have an autism spectrum disorder.

My diagnoses - social anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

I’m no longer involved with the ASD world.

I feel similar, except the reason I'm quiet is because I often have a hard time coming up with something to say or I come up with something and instantly think of a number of ways it could be misinterpreted. Even if it would be perfectly interpreted if I get to say all of it sometimes it would mean something else if I get interrupted. And then by the time I'm done analyzing it it often feels like "the moment has passed" and it would just be too awkward to say anything. But when I am contributing to conversation or especially when I say something sarcastic or clever or humorous or when I knock someone down a peg or when I win an argument or offer up a ridiculous one, etc. that feels good to me. But it's extremely rare that I can figure that out. I can tell I would be happier if I could keep those things up on a regular basis, so I'm trying to work on them but it's frustrating.

Another thing I hate about AS is how people think it's an excuse to be an a**hole and most people with it are bullies and jerks.

I have seen a few auties hate against aspies and I have an autistic friend like that because he was treated badly by them in the chatroom here.

On top of that, the people who assume that people with AS are "self-diagnosed' and thus it's not legitimate and they just want a "get out of jail free card" (see: "AS is an excuse to act like an a**hole [with no consequences]).

Never mind that these people DO NOT have the qualifications to diagnose AS on anyone (nor the qualifications to even say "That person doesn't have AS!") and rely on idiotic things like "People with AS don't have a sense of humor. That person has a sense of humor therefore they do not have AS."
