Just curious, when you were a child, were you a superstar at video games? Like, if anybody had problems getting through some difficult part in Mario where they had to exactly time some running and jumping through a series of rotating bars of fireballs, they'd come to you to get them through it?

Specifically, I'm asking... were you great at games that required "reflex skills" like the above situation? That is, side-scroller or action type of games.

How is this related to AS/autism?

Yeah kids have asked me a few times to help them get through something in a game. It be my brothers or their friends or mine. I was never a pro at games nor a savant.

I was just wondering if AS'ers tended to be good at games that require reflex skills. I can understand that aspies would probably excel at, and like, turn-based RPG games because it doesn't require ligthning fast reaction times and strategy is the key and I'm speculating they'd tend to do worse at, and possibly shun, action games or sidescrollers.

I'm wondering about this because I excelled at both types of games, so maybe this would be a piece of pro-NT evidence? I can tell you, though, I really sucked at that one Donkey Kong game, recently, on the wii. I'm not really sure if I would've done any better when I was 6, lol. Maybe it's the controller's fault?

It depends what game it is. Once my brother was stuck on a part of a game all day, so he asked me to help him with it. I did it straight away, and I had never played the game before!

He just said "get out, that's not fair."

When I was a child, there was no such thing as a video game. There was just barely television, and I never saw one of those things until I was a fairly big child.

<- scores a "literal point" for reading "rock" as being in the backwards-and-forwards sense. To which the answer is no, I think.

I was good (but not stellar) at twitch games, but not at anything requiring much brainpower.

Okay, you answered the question I was going to ask - "Am I the only one who read "rock" as physically rocking?

I wasn't around much in the way of video games when I was young, which means I did not physically rock.

I'm terrible at anything that involves hand-eye coordination. It's a joke among people I know how terrible I am at any that involve reflexes or aiming or such. I even have issues with minecraft for this reason - I have issues climbing ladders in it.

No. I lacked both the coordination and the attention span. I'm obsessed with Sonic as an adult, but I got that obsession via the cartoons. The last Sonic game I played was Sonic 2. I only played the first two levels of Sonic 3 via Nintendo DS. I was more into Mario as a kid anyway. I think it had something to do with being able to pick the levels I wanted to play. My older hardcore gamer brothers (who are NT) had already unlock all of the levels and I would play on those and kinda make up my own story for them. But aside from that, I never was never very good at video games, nor very intrested in them. Even as an adult, I perfer games where I don't have to play someone else's story line and can make up my own. Zoo Tycoon and The Sims are my all time favorite gamed. If I was as hard core obsessed with Sonic as I am meerkats, I might have all the games but never have the intention of playing them. I really suspect Sonic would be my main obsession if I were a kid today. My two closest friends on DA, are both diagnosed with AS and have Sonic obsessions.

Well, yes. It's also a big obsession for me. Stuff like Guitar Hero and Rock Band are pretty easy for me to do. And there's my absolute favorite.

I also tried to remember if I stimmed while playing video games. Probably not, because video games required focused attention with the eyes and fingers, and I don't think I stim when I am very focused.

When I was a kid, The games that rocked at was putting them on easy mode so I can win all the time. Honestly though I was sucked into games that I enjoy like my playstation rather then to beat the game. It was soooo hard for me to beat the games as a kid. :P

I whipped my brother in any fighting game we got starting with Street Fighter 2 then onto Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct.

It got to the point where he'd demand I handicap myself by not playing my favorite characters like Raiden.

Also one time in the Arcade I was building up a really long winning streak on Killer Instinct against the clerk who was using his key to play for free. I think I beat him at least 25 times and then had to go because I movie I had a ticket for in the mall was starting.

I first played a video game when I was 19, so I guess I'm too old to respond to this question. :) When I was a kid we didn't even have any toys, I mostly played with rocks and twigs. I guess I "rocked" rocks. :D (I got a degree in geology.)

I was never too great playing video games. Don't have the reflex or organizational skill. So I mostly played turn-based game like Civilization.

I was a pretty skilled gamer as a kid. If sucess is measured at how good one is at Contra, then I was a pro. Beat that game on hard with the three lives given.

Haha, yes! I still remember my next door neighbour knocking at our door and saying PLEASE come help us out on the last level of Sonic the Hedgehog, we only have one life left! So I went over and beat the level (flying dr eggman guy) and they were like, you made that look so easy.

Only when it came to RPGs. I could beat my brother in a Pokemon battle but he would always kick my butt at Super Smash Bros.

I think it's kind of weird how I'm good at paying attention to older shooters like Radiant Silvergun, but my attention span sucks when it comes to modern-day action games like Gears of War 3.
