My mother used to ask me this all the time. "Why can't you become interested in something else?" "Broaden your horizons!".

Next time she asks that I will ask her why she can't become interested in Transformers, Cartoons, and The Simpsons. :P

My parents used to get so upset about my obsessions, particularly my dad. He used to yell at me about my tv watching. Later it turned to my computer usage, etc. He especially disliked video games. It was really hard at times since I would have to hide what I was doing or sneak it in at off hours when he wasn't home. None of it caused me to lose interest. If anything, I just felt cheated and it meant I would spend more time later.

+1 to "sneak-watching" TV (well particular programs, especially if they were on at 4:30 AM!)

Haha. Yep! There's nothing like being able to watch a favorite program or play a favorite game without interruptions. :D

My mom used to tell me this all the time and when I asked her what was so wrong with meerkats she said nothing but that it wasn't healthy for a person to only like one thing. My mom now tells me she would have gone insane if she had to hear about meerkats 24/7. Then why was I always labled as the "selfish" one?

I remember when I was in grade 2 we were drawing pictures and because of my cat obsession I drew cats the teacher would say "draw something else" :)

I remember in fourth or fifth grade the school therapist wanted me to draw a picture of a person. I refused and drew a picture of a cat.

I did this as well. People are the main thing I refuse to draw. I draw myself as a meerkat/cat hybrid.

Ooh, this reminds me of when I was in 5th grade and we drew a classmate once every week. I would always draw them as animals. The teacher liked it!

My teachers would have chastised me for that. I highly believe that the majority of my school teachers became teachers so that they could live out their God complex.

And yet 80% of ASD people are unemployed. I am a big proponent of making kids do obsessions that could lead to employment versus SSI if they are otherwise capable. Sorry but there are two sorts of activities. Those that grow you as a person and those that we do to relax that do not grow us. I have yet to see TV or computer games grow anyone.

I was obsessed with a certain musical during my teens, and I joined an online text roleplaying forum. My mom made a big deal that I was spending all my time shut in my room on the internet, and decided I had joined a cult.

As for growing, the internet did help me develop a marketable skill - first, the text game really developed my communication skills. I still mainly wrote storylines involving my own characters and didn't interact a whole lot with everyone else on the board, but I did learn to write collaboratively eventually. And then, spending so much time on the internet got me obsessed with coding HTML. Hopefully when I'm done school, I'll be a web designer at least as a second job.
