Did you have any popular obsessions?

But it's teens who were into Spice Girls so I don't know what was that embarassing about this for you. You were 17 13 years ago - in 1998 so how could they be already becoming unpopular?

I don't think I ever had popular interests but for Harry Potter - but I indeed was old for this, I started to like it as a girl old enough to start to be called already a young woman - I was 20 so too old for this. I like and liked some novels and comics that are generally liked and popular (Vampire Chronicles for example) but not in my circle. Ah, I just recalled I was into Sailor Moon as a girl in my early teens - everybody liked it then (but the girls from my school didn't talk about this too often, I bet, for it was rather a cartoon series for little girls not teens).
For a while I thought aspies who have obsessions and if it happens to be popular, they can get away with talking about it and no one will ever get tired of it. Wrong. One of my aspie friends is obsessed with sports and has been since he was a small child. But he talked about it in school and kids teased him for it. Sure sports had always been popular but he still got crap for it just like I did for the Spice Girl and the Titanic. But I didn't even have the merchandise. I have heard of NTs that tend to get the merchandise based on their obsessions. One of my old best friends printed a bunch of Spice Girl pictures from the internet and waved them around in her hands bragging about it and I didn't care. Others probably didn't care either since they didn't say a word.

Austin Powers was one of those special interests. The Beatles was another interest that was popular and they will always be popular. The Kinks have gained some popularity since the September of 2009 when I've straightened up, woke up and smelled the roses. Flushed Away was popular for a while, though mainly with children. The least popular special interest that I've had was the UK 70s Punk Movement - correct me if I'm wrong.

That's interesting. When I was in school I was a fan of Dawson's Creek (which was popular, I liked that he was a filmmaker) and used my allowance to buy a tee for it from a department store. It was like my whole allowance, around $20, so I wore it a lot. I would wear it like once a week (I was limiting myself, xd). That is until someone who didn't know my name called me Dawson's Creek girl and I felt ridiculous, like it was childish or something. I didn't talk about my interest in the show though.
The ship thing totally makes sense to me regarding Titanic. I really liked the special effects when the people were going overboard & people did not like to hear that. They only wanted to hear about Leo, who I also liked, so I tried to not mention that anymore.
I used to be like that about things I liked. It seemed to make them less special to me.

I was in junior high when they were really popular & where I lived my sister & her friends (so kids about 10, 11) were the ones who were really into the Spice Girls. I don't remember anyone in my age group being super into them. We liked them but not as much as the kids did. When a friend of my sisters was obsessed with them she set up dance routines & I was pulled into it cuz I was there (it was fun & I loved dressing people for stuff) but I got the impression by a friend who was coming to see me at the time that this may not be socially acceptable. (& we weren't even cool, to have to worry about that, but still)
I talked about Leo too because I heard other teen girls liked him and thought he was cute so I said the same. But kids in my school still didn't like hearing about it. You can't win.
Maybe it was because it was a small town and kids there weren't interested in the movie despite how popular it was. It was Montana so people were weird there. My mom even got asked if she was going to some party because of the way she was dressed. People there just didn't dress that way was why. Or maybe they didn't like me talking about Leo as Jack. Maybe I did it all wrong.
I've recently become obsessed with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. As I'm sure many other Internet-savvy people are aware, this show is highly popular among people in their teens as well as within my age group (though not necessarily my gender it would seem... A couple of days ago I lurked on ponychan and clicked on a topic where you were supposed to post pics of yourself, and there were maybe 2 to 4 women in the entire thread).
I'm also becoming obsessed with Hunter S. Thompson. I'm not exactly sure how popular he is, though I imagine that the recent release of the movie The Rum Diary has probably sparked some mainstream interest in him. Based on the kind of websites I tend to find articles about him on, I think he is most popular within the recreational drug community, literary circles and men who like badasses to look up to.

I had a Hunter S Thompson obsession a few times too.
I often get obsessed with waves. How they're formed. I used to surf and bodyboard and would often spend most of my time just staring at waves for hours.
In regards to My Little Pony, well I actually saw a friends collection today. She has......around...... TWO HUNDRED!

The popular obsessions I had were kind of inappropriate for me to have despite being popular. I was obsessed with Beavis & Butthead when it came out & I think I was about 12 at the time; I quoted it a lot even thou I didn't fully understand what I was saying at the time. I was obsessed with Family Guy since it came out & I quoted that a lot too. I was obsessed with pop music & the iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove(I had a mega huge monster crush on her) till a few months ago & some members on other forums thought I some kind of sick creep when I talked abut that stuff(which I did a lot) because I was 28; it would of been fine if I was a tween thou

The biggest one was Pokemon.
The funny thing is, in my youth I spent time importing video games, because there were a ton of good ones that didn't come out here or took forever to.
Back in 1997, the flea market had a copy of Pokemon Green in Japanese. I bought it with part of my life savings (back then I was 9 so I didn't have a whole lot of money). Played the hell out of it. This was before Pokemon became popular in the US. All the other kids thought I was weird. I also bought Pokemon cards; they had been selling them for at least a year in the US before the games got popular.
Due to a lack of Japanese knowledge I gave Pokemon Green to my parents to sell and found out later that Red and Blue were only a month away from coming out. I also got rid of my cards because nobody else had them and wanted to play the game. Fast forward to 3 months later, and Pokemon was like the biggest thing ever. All those kids who laughed at me for having the game and the cards were now the ones deeply engrossed in it. Yet these kids were so determined to tell me to get on the Pokemon bandwagon--when I'd been probably the first kid in Ohio on it. This is about the time that I first learned that people are stupid. I bought pretty much all the games until Ruby and Sapphire came out, and it fell off the wagon severely and lost its spark.
Dragonball Z. I first saw the series on a foreign channel back in 1994-- at the time a weird dub of the original Dragonball series was airing too. I don't remember all the details because I was 5 years old at the time. I do remember confusing young Goku (in Dragonball) for Gohan (Goku's son in Dragonball Z). About 3 years later DBZ started airing on Fox in the graveyard slot. I used to describe the show to kids at school and they didn't believe it existed. Within the next year or so they started airing it on Cartoon Network. The "anime empire" began to build at that point. Everyone in my class was obsessed with it.
Another one was Naruto. I started reading Naruto back in 2003, when Viz put the series in Shonen Jump magazine. Again, I was made fun of for liking the series. Fast forward 2 years and Viz got the rights to air the TV show. All of a sudden, it was the new fad.
I find that I tend to like stuff years before it becomes popular. No, I'm not a hipster.

I was obsessed with Hunter S. Thompson several years ago, not long before Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas came out, but I didn't know about the movie until after it was on DVD. I'm actually re-reading FLLV right now, although that's not the only book of his I care about.
I find gonzo journalism to be quite interesting, and specifically Thompson's use of illustrative absurdity. I never really thought of him as a "badass." If anything, he seemed to have quite a few issues leading up to his suicide.
Being obsessed with DIY skills, making & fixing stuff, made me pretty popular with the anarchist punk kids. They all want to learn stuff from me. I didn't find them until I was 27 though, so it happened later in life.

Can you seriously get more popular than Doctor Who these days? Well, maybe for nerds... But I love it and I once memorised a whole reference guide I could write my own fan fiction about it and sounded like I had been watching it for 30 years.
I can't get along with other Doctor Who fans though. They like it for different reasons and discuss things of no importance to me.

My friend and I like Zachary Quinto who plays a young Spock in the new Star Trek, but we never refer to him as Spock, unless we were actually talking about the movie. But usually it is 'I have a crush on Zachary Quinto' 'I know, how good looking is he?' etc. My friend has taught me how to be a giggling horny teenager NT girl.
