I can see the logic behind it.
One would assume that the ordinary people line would have more people in it than the VIP line, since being a VIP becomes meaningless if the majority of people are VIPs.
Thus, if you're after the ordinary people line and you haven't seen the signs indicating which line is which, it makes sense to go to the line with more people.
Logic, not herd behaviour.

It might be logical to make that assumption based on a limited amount of facts and mostly assumption but I still think that looking around and getting more information before making a descision is a superior strategy. I tend to do nothing unless I am absolutely sure it is what I should do and I have verified it.

The first thing listed on the paper was "read all instructions before starting". Then the last thing said ignore all those instructions and just flip your paper over and sit there. It was a test on how well you can follow instructions.

I had that test in school, I had forgotten all about it.

That video is nuts. I would end up arguing with everyone. I'd come up with some make shift ruler and measure the damn things to prove it.

Exactly what I was thinking. Nobody jumped in and said, "hey that's not right!". The crazy herd mentality. On a positive note peer pressure was never an issue for me.

I didn't know that this was what we were doing.

@btbnnyr
I agree with you. We weren't doing that.

@daveydino
Please explain why you think some people were making fun of others.

I remember my mom and I were driving somewhere (I think to pick up my older brother from college), I had to use the restroom really bad so my mom pulled into a service station and said to use that one. The restroom was around back and there was a LONG time of teenage and twenty something girls. There had to be at least ten of them. I looked over and there was no line for the men's so I used that one.

Why, because you can't see how you were obviously doing that? Don't play dumb.

LOL! I do that all the time!

However, a creepy example of "herd behavior" is an argument I had with a group once. I was told, "If the majority agree, who is right?" Regardless if one person is factually correct. I realized how different I was and how scary "normal" thinking can be when you're at odds with it.

Yes, I do see now. You are making fun of others on this forum because you seem to think it will make you socially successful. You really need to develop a better sense of humor and not be so mean-spirited. I think the colloquial saying for this is "get a life".

Oh if only you knew how to see irony... And no, that's not the reason. Try again, Mr. Scientist.

I believe the point of this thread was to point out the value of having the mindset of an individual, the value of assessing a situation rather than going along with the group (going along being a decision based on an emotional reaction like comfort level). rather than to make fun of people. More making fun of a situation if anything.

It can be quite a serious topic actually, it is that "herd mentality" that allowed the Nazis to commit atrocities, the reason riots happen, why witnesses to a crime do nothing. It's a well studied phenomenon about the sense of diminished responsibility related to the size of the group. One person alone observing a situation feels more responsibility to act than each person if there are two. Three people, each one even less. It is also a huge factor in bullying and all kinds of assaults.

I like to think that all this is proof that we are supposed to evolve into being less affected by our surroundings or groups (which would make those on the spectrum a little further along, ;-), only partly kidding!)

If all your friends jumped off a bridge would you?

Except when you have Asperger's AND social phobia, you tend to follow what NTs do to avoid being judged negatively. I've been working on that lately.
