I was four or five? Maybe even older. And I could not tie my shoelaces. My mother got fed up, and made me sit in a chair in the kitchen and would not let me go out to play with my friend until I had tied my shoes.

I cried, and I could see my friend's face bobbing up and down outside at the door as she tried to see what was keeping me, so we must have been pretty young. Meaning she was so short, she couldn't reach the window of the door frame...

Tough love from Mom, I must have learned to ties my shoes that day because I did get to go out and play. But she had had it with tying my shoes and was doing something in the kitchen while I sat there and finally sorted it out. But it was very upsetting and very frustrating and I have never forgotten it.

And yes, my shoe laces still often come untied....

I used to wear velcro shoes as a kid. Until I was eight. Then I learned to tie my shoes using the "Bunny Ears" method. I still use the "Bunny Ears" method to tie my shoes to this day.

I started school when I was 3yrs and had taught myself how to do it before then. I had a lot of friends that I would not have had otherwise (because they could count on me to tie their laces). I'm not very dextrous at all, but this was never an issue for me. We didn't have velcro shoes when I was a child, so I really had no option but to learn. My daughter's 6yrs and can't do it and I still have to help her with some buttons too. But, most of her shoes have velcro, so there hasn't been the pressing need.

With the bunny ears method, my shoelaces are either too tight and thus painful, or not tight enough and this sensation is so frustrating and wrong I can't even explain it. It's like being in pain but not actual pain. It's excruciating. Plus, no matter how tight I tie them, they come untied very quickly, sometimes within a matter of seconds or minutes.

I was in my late 20s when I started buying velcro shoes. Also, shoes with buckles work just as well. Laces, though, no way.

Or shoes that don't require anything, although many of those are painful to wear because of fibro.

I had quite a bit of trouble, though I can't say if it was more or less than normal. I can however say that I'm horrible with knots. I have a hell of a time learning new ones and forget them if I'm not using them constantly. Also have pretty bad handwriting, it was good for one year in school when we were graded on the quality of it, but it took forever and hurt my hand. It's now to the point that sometimes I don't know what I've written if I go back and look at it again.

Yeah, it sucks when my shoelaces become untied due to using Bunny style. But it only happens once every few days, so it's no problem for me to just re-tie my shoes.

I figured out a way to tie them myself and it's very unusual and mechanical, meaning my hands are like a machine doing a process. I've never seen anyone tie like this, but the knot is a genuine shoelace knot. I've shown a few people and they were fascinated.

Was about ten or eleven and it was even worse due to being lefty. I pulled them out and wore shoes without laces.

I don't think I got it right until I was 9. I used to tie crazy spaghetti mess knots in my shoes, I could get them out though!

I was six when I learned and that's definitely a normal age. I didn't really get a chance to learn before then either, though, because we lived in a hot climate so I was always in sandals.

I do remember having a more trouble tying shoelaces than my peers. Even when I learned how to tie them I would always end up being slower than everyone else in putting my shoes on. My brother and I just ended up double knotting the laces and simply sliding on and off the shoe like a slipper. That way I only had to tie my shoes once a month or less. People said that it would ruin my shoes by using them the way I did but they work just fine so I guess it didn't matter. but in general I don't have much trouble with things like shoelaces, even if they are tedious.

I had a problem with tying my shoes and still do and my handwriting is bad so now I wear skater type sneakers and keep them tied and slip them in and off so I don't have to tie them that much-I know it sounds silly but its what I have to do-the skater snaekers help with my balance and they don't slip to easily so I stay upright
