What do you guys think of Rain Man?

Watched it when I was little, never watched it again to have a second opinion. I quite liked the characters. But then, I don't remember the film itself now as an adult.

Boring and offensive, but mostly just boring. Another "talky people movie". I'mma go watch Lion King instead. It's only offensive to me becuase it seems like people's only idea of autism is Rain Man. Kim Peaks, the inspiration for Dustin Hoffman's character wasn't even autistic. He just had a simaliar condition.

I'm nothing like Dustin Hoffman's character. If someone tried to kidnap me like that, there would be trouble, some blood here and there and possibly some misplaced teeth. I think one of the reasons I hated Rain Man so much was because Dustin Hoffman's character was a total pushover and never fought back or stood up for himself. I really hate those kind of characters.

I like the film. The way I look at it is that it was made a number of years ago now when autism wasn't as well known about so when they wrote it, Raymond was high functioning. The only offensive thing about it is Tom Cruise... I f wording hate him!

Rain Man isn't offensive. It isn't boring. It's alright. The main thing I remember from the movie was the scene where the brothers were in the phone booth, and Tom Cruise's character says to Rain Man, "did you f**king fart?!" and Rain Man goes, "oops".

I don't remember the plot well either, but the character of Rainman stroke me as having some similarity with me. I don't mind Tom Cruise's play, he acts as to enhance the contrast between the two brothers. And I love its music, I have the soundtrack CD, my favorites are Scatterlings of Africa, Leaving Wallbrook (End Credits), Dry Bones, Blue Horizon.

My brother has the soundtrack. The movie has good music, yes.

My own family doubts I'm on the spectrum because I don't look or act like Rain Man, a character who isn't even autistic. Yet, through the magic of Hollywood, he's representative of us.

I enjoyed Rain Man and think that some people have over-high expectations of it. It's not a documentary, it's a feature film, so naturally it doesn't have that strong a relationship with reality.

I thought that some aspects of autistic processing were quite well observed, though, as you might expect from a perfectionist like Hoffman.

One moment that particularly stands out in my mind is when they're in the institution, and one of the characters takes a book off a shelf. The friction-noise of the cloth-backing of the book rubbing against its neighbours is amplified on the soundtrack into a ZZZZIP! sound and Raymond becomes momentarily flustered in response and says "Oh my!" -- no-one else notices it at all.

Ha! This. Although I don't mind Tom Cruise' older stuff so much.. much better than his newer movies, IMO.

And same here.. I've been called Rain Man several times throughout my life, especially when I was going to business school and could calculate & recite answers to various math questions before others in the room even realized what the question was.
