I don't like shoes either. I have to wear them when I walk but I like to take them off as soon as I sit down. I took my shoes off at school and during exams too.

When I was little, 5 - 10 was the most. I would just wonder off for a few hours. I would turn around once I came out of my daydreaming. It was kind of nice that most of the time my parents never noticed. Not being interupted helped me learn about my surroundings, how to deal with people and my self confendence of taking care of myself.

When I was 5 my best friend was an autistic 5 year old girl. She too would wonder off. Her parents gave her hell about it. Haveing seen what it did to her, and if I had a child like that, I would just walk behind them. A few times sally and I wondered off together - it was magical to not be alone while being who I was.

Living in colder states during winter I quicly learned to wear warm shoes.. But in South Florida - I only wore shoes because at school we had to....
When I'm in a new town, I love wondering off. Only now I call it "long walks"

I did once, just started walking when I was in first or second grade. No reason (though parents were harsh, verbally abusive, etc.) that had thouht. an hour later a neighbor found me walking. It was the gossip of our elementary school for a week!

Sincerely,
Matthew
PS. Later if upset, I would wander off, but eventually come back..

Not walking, but bike riding. I rode my bike everywhere for hours, just touring around the neighborhoods.

And this is a perfect example of simple acceptance by others. How hard can it be?

I wandered off all the time as a kid until middle school. Gave my mom much pain and worry because of it. I got lost( as in wandered off and they couldn't find me) almost every time we went out to a park or something. Or I would just go wondering around after school without telling anyone. I still do it sometimes, but nowhere near the degree I did as a kid.

I did walked out shoeless when I was little a few times from what I can remember, but I didn't do that at home( apartment in a big city) as dirty asphalt or pavement is not something you want to walk on.

I know, right? It was a lovely experience being an engineering student! I think there must be a higher concentration of Aspies in engineering than in the general population because quirky behaviour among engineers seems to be tolerated to a greater extent at my workplace than it is in all the other employees like scientists and attorneys...or maybe it is just that we do the work others find tedious and boring so no one wants to make us upset enough to quit.
