It's best to be careful at the shelter. They appear nice but do you really know their true intentions? It's not a good place to go and look for dates. You don't want to get unbeknowingly involved with a fugitive running from the law or a serial killer.

Typically its not sociopaths who end up on the streets, sociopaths usually don't have a lot of trouble succeeding in this society actually.

To the OP. I imagine they recognized a lack of streetwiseness in you and were trying to get over on you. Before I learned any type of street smarts, I used to just think people were friendly. I found out otherwise.

Yes, until they get caught and thrown in prison. They serve their time and experience difficulty finding employment with a felony on their record after release. Eventually they end up on the streets because they cannot afford housing. They find their way to shelters. You can get a knife pulled on you really easily so it's best to be cautious around strangers.

Last I checked being a sociopath/psychopath is not a crime, however if a sociopath/psychopath gets caught breaking the law it is likely they will serve time and yes going to prison for any reason even if its not a violent crime makes it much harder to find employment. It is certainly a good idea to be cautious around strangers but I just find the idea most homeless people are violent criminals a little bit ridiculous.

I didn't say most were but who can tell which stranger is okay and which one isn't? This is why I urge the OP to be cautious and try not to get mixed up with criminals or anything illegal. Homeless shelters are not a mosaic of righteous souls. Better to be safe than sorry.

True....though last time I hung out with homeless people we were illegally sitting by a campfire, so I suppose its up to the individual how they feel about any illegal activities.

At one of my old jobs I had to deal with homeless people a lot, every single day. They are generally pretty interesting people, with captivating stories, if you give them a chance. However you need to remain very wary of them. Some of them smell like elephant dung from 20 feet away, though.

To be honest, I'm more afraid of the non-homeless, normal people than the homeless ones. About a mile down the way, there's a sort of skid row area where a lot of homeless people frequent. Most of them have obvious mental issues yet they would be less likely to mess with you or try to kidnap you than some joker in a car.

I agree it's the "normal people", contrary to popular belief, that you really have to watch out for though I still agree you should be careful about trusting any homeless guys who put the moves on you.

I am talking about trafficking, burglaries, drug use, vandalism. This stuff does happen and homeless people do engage, some of them, at times. Just being a vagrant is enough to get someone arrested in some cities.
Who knows, one of the dudes approaching the OP might really be wanting to pimp her out and that is the only reason he is being nice. It is better the OP be made aware these realities do exist and to make informed decisions about people.

I remember I needed bus fair to get to the welfare office one time. The only person around was this homeless man at the bus stop. I asked him, "You wouldn't happen to have a dollar would you?" He looked at me and he pulled out a $20 bill and gave it to me. What he said I'll never forget..."Your going to do great things kid, don't blow your life away like I did. You already remind me of my son Jacob, Good luck kid." I cried and he gave me a hug.

What exactly is a vagrant anyways? and personally I don't think drug use should be a crime.....but that's not the point of this thread. But I do agree with the point you make about being aware of realities and making informed decisions. But also I think most homeless shelters have rules/guidelines people have to follow to avoid getting kicked out...though its still good to be careful.

I'm pretty sure where I live it's someone wandering around private property, loitering without a permanent address. I knew someone who got arrested for it, once. He rode his bike through a military housing complex and a cop found him and arrested him for vagrancy.
