What is a meltdown?

Actually, for me, shutdowns are quite literally, my brain shuts down. I can't move, I can't really think (sometimes, anyway), and I stop functioning for a few hours. Sometimes, I lose the ability to speak before or after the previous description. Much less often I lose the ability to read.
Sometimes the retreat turns into a this unspeaking, I unthinking shutdown. It's usually when someone pushes me for an emotional response as I'm retreating. Thankfully this is pretty rare (once a year, if that now). This was very common when I was younger which drove my mum nuts. It's was like having a vice on my temples and a wedge down my throat.
I am an adult now, so it hardly ever reaches this point. I can leave the office early, work from home, or go for a walk, drive without anyone thinking anything of it. Same at home. I guess this is why the right job is important. My wife has learned how to pull me out if it a little too.

Often it hits me very quickly. Sometimes I can sense it coming (earlier - last night - I knew it was coming on while I was in a video game and suddenly could not understand what I was looking at). I took a break and while I had some sensory processing shutdownish problems, I didn't have a full shutdown.
My frequency has dropped from last year, however, as it happens 1-2 times a week at most (I was up to 5-6 at one point). I am not sure if I've become acclimated to the increased overload due to screaming children or the fact that I wear headphones a lot of the time helps. Or both.
