I find that I have to keep tight control over not repeating noises and overheard phrases. When I was younger, people would think that I was making fun of them, and get angry. When alone, I often sing commercial jingles over and over. I remember some from back in the 1960's! My sister, who is severely autistic, had this ritual where she'd pace in a circle to keep time with her favorite jingle or song. I also used to drive people crazy with repeating movie lines over and over. :)

My son has HFA and does this quite frequently. My daughter has mild MR and had delayed echolalia when she was little so this is probably not restrictive to the autism spectrum either.

I also rememer as a kid repeating words - one time on a car trip I kept repeating the work "skunk" over and over - it was mentioned that is was annoying :) . I don't think there was a reason why - it just felt good to say. I also have noticed since my son was diagnosed with HFA how many times I use phrases from TV in conversation but no one notices because it is used apprpriately. So I don't think it is a big deal when my son does it. I think of it as a special ability.

I have a habit of repeating myself. Sometimes I don't notice it, but people will ask me if I stutter, because they heard me say the same thing twice. ANd sometimes I will repeat other people, not as severely as I would myself, but it does happen.

I never repeat myself. No, I never repeat myself.

*SHOT. BIG TIME.* Rofl

Ooooookay, sorry... Yeah, I repeat things a lot... Not to an Autistic level, though... It'll be completely quiet in a room, and suddenly I quote these lines I heard from a movie anywhere from a day to 15 years ago. It's random what lines they are. People look up and ask me why I said what I said, and what it means. I smile and say, "Oh come ON! Don't you catch the reference!!?" They frown and shake their head. I get mad and storm out of the room, sometimes turning on Sonic the Hedgehog until I'm calm.

But I only say the lines once, not over and over. I guess that would be Palilalia or whatever it's called, not Echolalia. But my mom teases me (in play) about it... Every time I rattle off a movie line, she sings, "Schwa has echo-laaaaaaaliaaaaaaa..." And I cup my mouth and go, "Aw DAMMIT, I did it again!" And it disgusts me, because I can't control it, but at the same time it's utterly hilarious.

And I even say these movie quotes in MMORPGs online, too! As in, using the Chat feature! ....I have issues. XD

Glad to contribute to the thread. ;D

I did a similar thing where I had to be a certain place or doing a certain thing when a song or commerical jingle was on.

Mom said that as a little kid I would parot back tv commericals and the chorus line of song for hours on end. I would also repeat things I said three or four times.

Yeah I do both echolalia and palilalia. Whenever a sentence or song or anything audible ends regardless of whether I said it or someone else I repeat it over and over again sometimes for hours.. but I havent done it out loud in a long time.

I eventually understood people found it creepy so I trained myself to do it subvocally (basically Im still talking just with my mouth forced closed so others cant hear or see my mouth moving).

When Im stressed though I forget and mouth the words but I still manage to keep it so soft only I can hear it.

Songs stick in my head sometimes and I 'hear' them replaying over and over. It's usually when I'm tired or stressed. It's never a songs I like though, always the cr*ppy, irritating ones.

I can't help but notice a pattern here: commercials. They're made so stick in your head; but perhaps people with unusual brains absorb them in unusual ways...

Apparently I would run into the living room as a child to stare slack-jawed at commercials, but as soon as the show started, off I ran to continue playing. I must have been about 3 or so...

Another cute anecdote:

My parents, drinking with friends at our house one night on a saturday, wanted to order pizza but were too drunk to remember by heart and were even having trouble with the phone book... Luckily I was hiding around the corner and piped up, "Three-ten, thirty thirty! Greco!" singing the then-popular commercial jingle.
My folks were so grateful (or drunk...) they let me stay up and have some pizza with them. :)

Sometimes I get stuck on what I think are cool sounding words and find myself saying them softly to myself. Sometimes people hear me,but I don't care. I just smile at them and let THEM figure it out.

no, but my friend does. she's always nervous on the car rides to and from school. she also has a nervous coughing tic. i think the idea that her coughing annoys others makes her nervousness even worse.

words will repeat over and over again in my head. now that's very annoying.

Yes, I do this too, but for me I think it's also related to me being an aural learner. I will speak my thoughts aloud to myself (if no one else is around), because it helps me think to HEAR my thoughts with my ears, rather than just think them. Most of the time, I also re-word what I've just spoken again and again, as if fine-tuning a speech for maximum clarity of communication. Sometimes I'll just recite the final word of a sentence, trying to fine-tune the tone and inflection. I seem to fall below my own standards of voice inflection -- meaning I'll hear in my head exactly how I want to inflect a sentence, but then it will come out differently. I must be getting OCD there -- I'm sure this is not too common among aspies, so sorry for rambling that last bit.

I do though I don't think it's too obvious. And I try to do it quietly. But I have some echolalia and delayed echolalia.

I do more echolalia than palilalia.

I sometimes repeat what the person has just said to me this occurs often in shops in the middle of a transaction or when I casually meet someone in the street they ask me a question I repeat the question or they give me an answer and I repeat it, I reckon its nerves and slow processing!
