Well, it is an irrational thing to say, especially since it is based on a silly superstition and has no utility, But, then again, many of the social rules our society blindly follows are irrational and without utility. Wearing a tie, looking people in the eye all the time, shaking hands, and the sort are all irrational.

I am actually going to focus heavily on irrational social norms in a paper that I am writing for a class on philosophy of the social sciences. Silly social norms are often used by sitcoms because they can produce funny situations. Seinfeld mastered the skills of making fun of social norms. Rather than saying "God bless you," wouldn't it make more sense to say "You're so good looking" when someone sneezes? At least that may make them feel better.

I thought I was alone. Having suffered allergies in some form or another for many years, I've had to hear it a lot. Worst part is if I have a sneezing fit - on one occasion, I once had to tell someone that "you don't need to do that".

Just tell them to say "you're so good looking" instead of "God Bless you"

I'm religious so the word does not offend me.
But I do SNAP when someone interrupts a good series of sneezes....

It really annoys me. Even worse: some people sneeze and then say "thank you" as if I had said something like "bless you", which I certainly did not. It feels like they demand the "bless you" or try to make me see that it was wrong not to say it. It is so stupid!

I don't care and I never thought anyone could have an aversion for this. In my country anyway, we hear on this occassion: "a hundred years" (of life) or "for health", instead :)

I used to hate it for two reasons: first, it is religious in nature and it is rude to make wishes regarding one's religion to random people because one has to assume that the religion is meaningful to that person, and two, it made no sense (the person deserves a blessing just for sneezing?). Then, I was told about what it is supposedly based on, a sort of "good luck" due to fear of the sneezer dying because the heart supposedly stops during the sneeze. So, now I hate it for being an idiotic custom that people follow blindly, and the projecting religion thing.

It annoys me. I've never said it, never responded when someone says it to me.

It's annoying as hell. Just another example the of mind numbing meaningless crap that people repeat over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over... :wall:

I don't care if someone says "bless you" after I sneeze. I don't say it when someone else sneezes, though. I don't get why people say it in the first place. I'm thinking, "why are you blessing me? What are you blessing me with?".

Precisely my thoughts.

I'm a non-practicing Christian, but I often say "bless you" when someone sneezes just to be polite or show sympathy to the sneezer. It's kind of like if someone was coughing and I asked "Are you okay"? When someone says bless you to me, it's not a big fat religious deal, I usually just say thanks. I know the whole thing originally started because either because your heart stops each time you sneeze or people used to believe your soul was trying to escape. Or is that when you yawn? :)

I thought it started because of the Plague.

I hate people who say "bless you" or "I'm blessed". It's f*****g annoying. It sounds pompous and condescending.

No. They are just trying to be nice, and it doesn't hurt me.

If my understanding of the word "Condescending" is correct then I completely agree... I find it very patronizing and belittling.
