I would say that recognizing facial expressions and being able to Empathize with the way that other people express their emotions would be considered empathy. I think that a lack of empathy is a trait of asperger's however it may be described badly. Perhaps it would be better if it was described as "A lack of natural ability to interpret other people's emotions." When described like that then it still implies the capacity to empathize but more or less emphasizes a lack of natural born talent to do so.

Have you ever taken the Myers-Briggs personality test or the Enneagrams ? You may just be a thinker, or perhaps an extreme thinker. Maybe you are an introvert, or a judger( on the organized side rather than a scatter brained type). I wouldn't be surprised if you have actually have empathy, but don't express it in the manner which is approved by the mental health types. Your personality style may be just different form the rest, Not BAD at all, but simply not what the extraverted,, feeling, psychological types want you to be. You don't have to become one of them. Just be yourself

Yes I have taken the MBPT a long time ago and I remember scoring INTP. However I, unlike most, consider the MBPT to be almost pseudoscientific. I do not believe in the accuracy of the MBPT and I place little importance on people's results. To me it seems to be slightly more credible then astrological horoscopes. Each and every question (and answer) on the MBPT couple apply to anyone and really just depends on the mood that the individual is in.
