Often. I know the words, but I don't really know what a lot of them mean. I like joking around with them because I think some of them are quite ridiculous.

Not a problem for me. I understand it fine. Just don't like having to keep up with new slang. Urban Dictionary makes that pretty easy though.

Whenever I hear a new slang word or phrase, I look it up on Urban Dictionary, too. I know some people on there write weird (or completely wrong) definitions, but that's what the thumbs up or thumbs down ratings are there for. The more people giving it a thumbs up, the more likely it is to be correct.

I was WAY off on what I thought the starfishing thing was. Blame it on Limp Bisquick

I did a sort of aspie homecoming earlier when someone used a slang term for being angry, I said 'so you spurned him like a cur did you?'

But before that, the pastor who was guest speaking was giving the example of the prodigal son, he said the son went to a biblical version of Vegas and 'made it rain, y'know' :makes hand motions of throwing money on the stage at a strip club:

It just now occurred to me that I actually have no idea what the expression "looks can kill" means... 8O

I understand most of it, but I really don't like it and I wish people would speak properly.

Wait... either I have something totally wrong myself, or this conversation is wrong. Isn't a "slut" just a "loose woman", whereas a "hooker" is a "prostitute"? In other words, you need to pay the "hooker", but not the "slut".

That's what another friend told me when I asked them.

Not at all now. I've picked it up pretty well. I'll either figure it out from the context, or I'll ask someone close to me who knows the answer.

I just remembered this...a couple months ago, I overheard someone having a phone conversation in public use the phrase, "it's Kool-Aid in the valley." The first thing that came to mind was--you guessed it--a valley full of Kool-Aid.

It occurred to me a few moments later that he was speaking figuratively, and referring to Silicon Valley.

And yet I still don't understand the meaning of herp, derp and words like that.

I don't have trouble with basic slang, like "What's up?" but it seems like newer stuff makes zero sense to me.

I don't think the meaning of herp, derp-ery is very clear. I think of it as more like a form of an onomatopoeia-like space filler for someone who's not really done or doing something all that intelligent. It's almost like a less self-deprecating form of "D'oh!" to me. Right? Wrong?

My boyfriends friend who is heavily influenced by the "Internet culture" is always uttering silly nonsense words and phrases like that. It's really only thanks to him and my boyfriend that I have an idea of what other people who are into Internet culture are talking about.

Yeah, I've always been behind the curve on current slang, behinder the older I get. I was also always the one in the office who was clueless about the current gossip and rumors. I think these two things go hand in hand.
