My strongest SIs never leave me. They are lifelong. For SIs of low or moderate intensity, I find new ones pretty frequently, at least every 1-2 years. Extremely intense SIs come around very, very infrequently, however, and few stay at such a high level of intensity for longer than 2-3 years. Of my many SI areas, the three most intense SIs are I Love Lucy, neuropsychiatry, and Cedar Point.
This summer is filled with all three of my most intense SIs. I went to Cedar Point for Memorial Day, I'm working on a couple Lucy projects, and I've been reading many recent journal articles and a textbook about the neurobiochemistry of bipolar mania (my strongest area of interest within neuropsychiatry). This week, I've read the most recent findings on lithium's mechanism of action, and there is now much evidence of how and why lithium works on certain second messenger systems in the brain. Lithium's effects have long been a biochemical mystery, and it's very exciting to now know that the second messenger system hypothesis has specifics and irrefutable results.
