I tried watching this (I think I still have an old VHS copy somewhere!) but I couldn't get into it because I couldn't see a story going anywhere, it wasn't logical if I remember correctly, just characters talking about their feelings... the artwork was beautiful though - Am I thinking of the right one?

Maybe... I personally didn't like it until "Asuka Strikes" I thought it was just a dumb action series up to that point.

Mmm... nope, none what-so-ever.

I do enjoy analizing stories for themes, deeper meaning, and character examinations though.

Does knowing the motivations of others bring some sort of comfort?

Asuka is definitely NT because she acts like one,shinji has social anxiety and IDK about rei....but she would be the only one of the three that have AS but she doesn't have any interest so....
