Ever Used an Autism Alert Card?

I used one for my son once. We were in McDonald's and he offended some other kid somehow. I took him gently by the shoulders and walked him over to this child. I had him apologize to the child. Then I told him (my son) to go play with someone else for a while so the little boy could cool off a bit.

Despite all this, the mother started talking VERY loudly RIGHT behind me to her child (supposedly)..."We talked about this, didn't we? That not every family has values. Some just don't have them. Some people care about how their children behave and some don't. Not every mommy teaches her little boy to be polite...."

Rather than get up and slam her into the wall, which I'd have preferred, I handed her the autism card I had in my wallet and said loudly, "My son has autism. He sometimes acts inappropriately. Here is some information so you can learn about the condition." Then I walked away.

She shut the heck up after that.

It is the ONLY time I have ever used one of those cards.

Hi!

My doctor made these cards for me... It's Danish on one side, English on the other.
They are made of plastic in credit card size and tells the most important to others in case of something.. :-)

I think AndreasF's card is even better. It looks more professional and though the text is a bit longer it's also very accurate.

If I could actually get DXed (Which can be up to $2,000.00) and you need a referral, Then maybe. I would feel like I couldn't prove it anyway without official documentation.

I used it when the police came to my house (called by my partner at the time) in response to an incident that had happened. I wasn't arrested so perhaps it worked but some time after the event my ex partner said that was because he'd said he didn't wish to press charges so who knows!

The main police officer was female and she seemed very unpleasant to me - she said they liked to make arrests in domestic incidents if possible. Seeing as I had only poked my ex partner's neck slightly with a nail cardboard file, not even breaking the skin, I'd hardly call it a domestic incident!

I hadn't called the police myself on the various previous occasions when he'd pushed me about and I'd say I was at far more risk from him than vice versa. I'd already asked him to move out of my house prior to that day but he wouldn't go.

I carry an autism alert card with me and order it from the NAS website.
