Funny, it never crossed my mind that the OP might be male... But still, going to HR should always be a last recourse before packing and leaving, as you're indeed seen as "unintentionally dangerous" as mentioned above.
You're fortunate to be in a situation where you can keep your dignity and leave. I would too, no doubts! I was more talking from a place of a very bad world economy and the need to support oneself at any cost, sadly needing to manipulate one's way into respect as much as possible within one same job and in a reality where the boss is king because there's a surplus of professional, impeccably-resume'd applicants.
