Funny, it never crossed my mind that the OP might be male... But still, going to HR should always be a last recourse before packing and leaving, as you're indeed seen as "unintentionally dangerous" as mentioned above.

You're fortunate to be in a situation where you can keep your dignity and leave. I would too, no doubts! I was more talking from a place of a very bad world economy and the need to support oneself at any cost, sadly needing to manipulate one's way into respect as much as possible within one same job and in a reality where the boss is king because there's a surplus of professional, impeccably-resume'd applicants.

Can anyone please give me an opinion...what do you think might've happened if instead of going to HR the OP had taken to punching the boss the same way each time he wanted the boss's attention?

I can't even imagine the reaction to be honest.

Quitting will put me in a very bad financial spot (about $300 in savings) and leave me homeless. But that's nothing I haven't dealt with before.

Oh I'm sorry to hear that... I think it's so unfair that we're pushed to leave our jobs for being "unintentionally dangerous" to those in power. It's happened to me countless times. I'm lucky that the gov't here understands this and gives a (little) monthly allowance to aspies so they can have some kind of a roof over their heads and a little food.

That said, I always ended up at a better job, which I would've never gotten had I not been fired from the previous one. In fact, I've only advanced professionally by way of getting fired -- looking for a new job.

Update to the story: Word has gotten around the office that I have valuable skills and the manager doesn't understand/appreciate them.

To make a long story short, our tech department is looking into bringing me on in a different role under a different team which would allow complete creative control and freedom. If this goes through next week I will be in a much better position and I will be demanding a higher salary.

Thats what happened with me in a similar situation.
My manager ended up looking like a total f*%@wit and was later terminated and I was handed his job

Win Win right?
