The first step is omitting it.
AA, NA etc can seem pretty weird to an outsider/newcomer. I don't attend myself but my partner's a recovering addict and lots of our friends are so I'm surrounded by it all the time.
Alcoholics/drug addicts/whatever ("addicts", I'll refer to them as) are people with problems which they use drugs/alcohol/sex/food/computer games/whatever else to escape from. It doesn't really matter what someone's drug is, it's the fact they need to escape and the fact that they use whatever they can to escape. Then there's the thinking that goes with it; the false ego, the self loathing, pushing people away etc. The 12 steps are about looking at your behaviour, why you do it, breaking down the front which most addicts put on and building the person back up again.
It is crazy, it seems like a cult, it's full of people banging on about themselves, you'll meet your fair share of nutcases, but it works for a lot of people.
And don't be put off by the "God" aspect if you're not religious. It's a big stumbling point for people.

Slashdot is http://slashdot.org/ - "news for nerds". People post news and comments and other people vote on both, so that it's easy to find the best (most popular) stories and comments.
Speaking of jungle cats, I wouldn't try running away from them - or from bears. They can both run much faster than you.
