Please read what I wrote about university. It may not be necessary to pay for a private assessment to get your needs in this area met.

(also for info, my workplace pays £2.5k per ed psych assessment/report).

Why? There is no disputing whether I have it or not. But not all my difficulties have been identified; nor is there any evidence (apart from a letter stating I have it) that I have it - that's what I need.

I have just been informed by a private assessor that not all employers accept private diagnosis as valid.

so would have ho diagnosed you? This letter..who is it from? you need an official diagnosis and until then you cannot be sure that you do have it, the tests are very good.

So, after months of being told a load of BS about how my report has been lost, I am not registered with the GP named on my referral letter, etc. I was finally told yesterday that I didn't have the full assessment and that I was only screened. I am really not happy with this. I was hoping to have the full assessment done. The psychiatrist spoke to me yesterday and finally told me this.

Apparently, he doesn't do the full assessment and can't tell me the name of anywhere / anyone who can.

I am in South West England. Does anyone know of anywhere and anyone who will do the full assessment please?

I have now been sent a form on how to complain. I will write the stuff that I've written here about how I was only screened and all the crap I was told, I think.

The GP has to refer you, they cannot refuse. Sadly GPs are so unaware of the legislation:

As always, it's he who shouts loudest gets heard. Go back to your GP armed with relevant parts from the NICE guidelines in the above link. Tell them you know your rights, tell them if there is nowhere in your locality to assess you that you have a right to assessment outside of area and they have to pay for this. Tell them that not having an assessment/diagnosis makes your anxiety and whatever other symptoms you have worse. Tell them that in the long run you will cost far more to services in mental health if they don't assess you.

Good luck.

You have a letter stating you have it ... who from? If it's from the psychiatrist that screened you this should be sufficient evidence for your university to start a discussion with you regarding your needs, and to refer you to a needs assessor if you choose to apply for DSA.

It's not 4500, I had one session at the CLASS clinic Cambridge, it's the best place for Autism assessments, I would price it at 500 tops.

I'm not sure how it works in the UK, but I can tell you the series of referrals I went through for it in Canada. Went to GP first (walk-in clinic), was referred to psychiatric assessment services department in a major hospital. That department specialized in mood disorders. Did an initial assessment there and was then referred for testing for "diagnostic clarification" to a clinical psychologist specializing in personality and developmental disorders.

Do you have a choice in GP's? If so, see a different one.

Yes, here you can change the GP, i have seen 5 at my health centre since last year, I don't know why he doesn't see a different GP either.

Thank you. At the support group I attend, there is a man who is a GP. (He is on the spectrum) He said that due to the way this all works, his hands are tied in regards to what he can do. I've had a look to see if I can find any service for adults in the south west of England. There is virtually nothing. The closest is Southampton.

Uni won't help because it's a medical problem. :x Yet, they'd help if I was Dyslexic. :?

They (uni) told me to write in my profile what my needs are and what areas I need help. I have no idea what they are; as they haven't been identified.

How do I convince my GP that I need to be diagnosed? The lack of diagnosis (and therefore, support) is making studying impossible. Part of the reason why I failed this year is because of the lack of support. But that wasn't helped by being messed around by community mental health team for 7 months.

Your uni will help you. That's why they want to know what your needs are. They will ask the same of a dyslexic student. You are capable of identifying your study needs. You say studying is impossible, but what makes it so?

Consider every aspect of your study (suggestions below) and write down what you find difficult about it:
Attending lectures/taking notes
Taking part in tutorials/practical sessions
Carrying out research (reading, using the library, identifying relevant information)
Reviewing your notes
Organising and planning - both schedule wise and in terms of planning work
Writing assignments
Concentration and motivation

Then have a think about what might help you with the difficulties you have written down. If you need help with this please feel free to PM me ... This is my job.

You doctor can refer you to the Cambridge ARC...Autism Research Centre, you will be sent two questionnaires, and you mother one.The you go to the Clinic after getting an appointment and you will be assessed for 3 hours. A week later you will have your diagnosis.

U can also see another GP where you are. please complain strongly and report the practice to the local authorities. The have to listen to you and show empathy..it's your right to get a diagnosis, it may be that you do not have AS. Why are you certain that you have it? My GP said i was just like another patient and he had AS too.

Change GP or insist on a referral. or pay for a private assessment.

Thank you and thanks for the PM. I'm going to try again to convince my GP that I need a diagnosis - it's not a want; but it's a need. Maybe if I did have a diagnosis and the areas I need help were identified, I could get back to work.

Uni have told me they won't help me obtain the diagnosis - that's the main issue here.
