High/Low Functioning Designation Offensive?
Read about it a little. There are different criteria based on who you ask.
1. An IQ below 70. Not sure that's a valid definition. Sure, such a person would be pretty nonfunctional, but I'm pretty sure autism and retardation are not necessarily the same.
or
2. Unable to speak. Again, that seems odd. There are people that are quite intelligent and functional, but are just nonverbal. That hardly seems like a reasonable indicator.
There were a few others that made even less sense, but the gist seems to be that if you can learn, communicate, and interact with the world around you, then you're high functioning. So if you're on the internet reading this, congrats, you're high functioning!
