They taught us in acting school that this was one of the main signs of nervousness, along with raised shoulders and shifting one's weight from side to side.

Oh and I do the backpack cord thing. It's amusing.

Did they teach anything in acting school about how to minimize the tics?

Only to practice not doing them. They also made us do a lot of yoga to help us learn to relax our muscles and be super calm. I spent my whole first semester getting yelled at for raising my shoulders, which is the thing that really did it. I guess my only advice would be to keep it in the back of your mind and make yourself stop whenever you catch yourself doing it, until you just stop. I wish there was an easier answer, but I don't think there is.
