I say it all the time. Most because I'm too indifferent to make a choice. Saying I don't know is better than saying I don't care.

I don't say, "I don't know" as much as I used to and I realize now that it often just means I don't have a preference of one thing over another.

What do you want to eat?
I don't know.
Well, do you want to go out or eat in?
I don't know.
Is there something you have a taste for?
I don't know.
Is there somewhere in particular you want to eat?
I don't know.
