I used to have an odd reputation at the parties I was invited to (well... I was allowed to tag along because a friend of mine was going. I normally would not be invited otherwise.) I used to always bring my laptop to parties so that I wouldn't be bored! To others though, it made me seem anti-social...which I guess it was. I wound up forum posting instead of talking to the people around me. Then again, I had been around them before and found that none of them had anything in common with me and so I would end up bored and lonely in a house full of people.
I do the exact same thing; I even brought my nook to my mom's best friend's wedding yesterday, so I'd have something to do when I needed to escape all the music and small talk. I never even considered it weird until you mentioned it just now... I don't see why it should be weird, almost 50% of the world are introverts, and even neurotypical introverts don't like a lot of excessive noise, chatter or things going on around them. I am a hardcore introvert, and I'm currently reading a fantastic book lent to me by my friend which apparently "could have been written about me". It's called
Quiet by Susan Cain. Anyone interested in the psychology of introversion and why extroverts seem to be the only ones with a voice should definitely read it, it's really good.
