Get very irked when people pull my leg in public.

I usually find myself assuming someone's joking around when they actually mean it seriously, so my first reaction is to laugh and stay meek, then a few seconds later I discover (by their body language) that it wasn't a joke, so I feel stupid for laughing. Then the more I laugh like that when someone insults me, the more they think they can get away with hurtling me feelings.

I hate me.

Don't hate yourself. You are just erring on the side of assuming the other person is decent. If they're not, then they're the idiot, not you!

"Fool me once, shame on you..." is worth remembering.

Keep your chin up. You assume the best of others by default - a noble thing.

The second part of that saying is no less important: "fool me twice..." If you continue assuming the best as soon as you have evidence to the contrary, you're the fool.
