I know that there is a lot of discussion with regard to whether we should try to fit in or not. Outside work I don't even try, because it is just too exhausting, but since I can't tell my boss, I have to do the best I can during working hours. However, I think it might be a wasted effort. They still notice and still talk behind my back :(

Little black sheep, I adore your avitar, shadow and all.

I wouldn't call it worse, but it is perceptible, especially for folks who are close to someone with aspergers.

I work in a place with 150 co-workers. I suspect @ 9 of them are on the spectrum. That's 6%, which I know is way higher than is currently believed to be the statistical occurrence. But I believe that HFA is way under-diagnosed in the adult population.

The aspie traits pertaining to; theory of mind, reading non-verbal communication, talking in group settings, speech inflection, ability to function under stress and toe walking are perceptible. When I get to know an individual and he or she has more than a couple strong aspie traits, I just assume aspergers.

My "aspie" co-workers are absolutely typical in this respect; they do their jobs well and are mostly pleasant to work with. A couple of them are a bit unpleasant, they can seem rude. And that's typical of the overall composition of my workplace. Most folks are pleasant and likable and a few are annoying or harsh.

I have only spoken to one of my co-workers about aspergers and he is undiagnosed. He isn't particularly well versed on what aspergers is, but said his sister has suggested she thinks he may have it. I suspect that few if any of my co-workers is diagnosed. Nor am I diagnosing them. I simply notice it and have a name for it; aspergers. No big deal.

P.S. If all of the 9 "aspie" workers were to leave our workplace and be replaced, I don't think our business would run quite as well as it does now. Each of the 9 are reliably good at their jobs and all but 2 are fun to work with.

When I read this post, I had to look again at your location, because I could have written it myself. I don't work closely enough with anybody to say for sure, but one guy goes on and on about photography, one guy goes on and on about Elvis, one guy toe-walks a bit and won't look at you when you talk to him. I'm the one who never knows when people are kidding and doesn't talk unless I actually have something to say (I can't make small-talk beyond, "Hi, how are you? Nice day," etc.). The photographer and the toe-walker both have autistic sons, and so do I.

I am worse than I want to admit to myself. Just as long as my limited social interactions run relatively smoothly, no overt negative reaction on the part of the other person, that is okay.

This is the reason why I cannot speak to others when I can see myself in a nearby mirror. Cannot and will not abide watching myself on video. This is because I see myself and I know that I do not look like NT people do when they are socially interacting.

Hello everyone!

I just wondered whether we fully grasp how affected we are by our autism. Sometimes I think I manage really well and convincingly pretend to be normal. Then I hear what others think of my behaviour and I realize that they were never fooled. Also when I talk to friends and they point out how much of nonverbal conversation I missed although I thought I understood everything.

It makes me think that we might be worse at social interaction as we realize. Maybe it is just an illusion that we can "fake it". Maybe we only convince ourselves.

Any thoughts?

Yeah,

not understanding is a really bad thing. But that's not all. I guess quite many are somewhat stubborn as well.
This turns it into something like in between not understanding and not wanting to understand/not wanting to accept it to be wrong/not wanting to adapt

Aspies can do increadibly stupid things. Not only because they couldn't understand but also because adapting/changing would mean to loose the own personality.

Revenge is another issue. Sometimes I feel I want to revenge if somebody really treats me unfairly (which is often even a subjective impression).
NTs are much more tolerant to things being stupid or hurting

This sum can make aspies sometimes really really annoying, I think if you think this way along there is some objective truth in it
(where the behavior is a result of being abused, unfairly treated and similar (based on subjective feelings and also really truly) )

At least I am screwing myself often enough that I have/had it really difficult afterwards.
This can go until screwing a whole life with this stupidity

Still, allthough there are many things that you definitely shouldn't do
and there are things that you did you'll find bad afterwards and even against your normal moral values
this is only one side, the dark side of being an aspie

But then there are so many wonderful properties of aspies that I think it is really worth keeping most of the NTunreasonable traits
simply because you can clearly find a different and also by NT respected life,
just by being something special or something increadible for which you can really get some respect
I am 100 % sure.

Just selling yourself is a really difficult thing. NTs are really good at selling crap.
So why not sell something that is true (and in their minds maybe really crappy) to them
Some time they understand that there is truth in it.

All traits are part of the personality. And many people are still willing to accept weird people because there are plenty enough counterbalancing positive traits.
I am at least willing to fight for the truth and I do it even if it is considered crap.

My weapon is my really sharp logic sword and my outraging creativity, which considers a lot of things and finds important aspects.
Then I'll go after them and get them sold (Although most NTs will never be able to understand, because they'll just ignore it, because they just feel it is wrong without thinking and giving feedback, they are just so incredibly caught in their cage)

Ja ne NT:t jotka ei ikinä ajattele asiat kunnolla ja hauku meitä vaan pataluuks pitaisi ampua suoraan kuuhun! Jawoll !
