Food sensory problems?
As a child I was a really picky eater. I'm getting braver as an adult and trying new things but it's still a challenge. For me it's mostly texture of food, or how I perceive the texture of a food to be that puts me off.
I hate anything that's vaguely powdery - lentils, peas, beans and certain types of potatoes. If a potato isn't mashed into creamy, buttery goodness or has a waxy consistency I really struggle to eat it.
Vegetables I prefer raw for the most part. I don't like soggy food, e.g. If bread has sauce on it for too long and goes wet or pastry that has gotten wet with a sauce or anything. In fact any kind of wet food is off putting unless it's a thick sauce. I hate runny gravy. For years I wouldn't take a drink of water if food was in my mouth, even if I was choking.
I won't touch mushrooms because they are unpleasant to touch raw and I can't even begin to imagine how I would deal with them cooked.
Certain meals have to be mixed all together before I will eat them - spag bol is mixed and then cut up into small pieces so I can eat it with a spoon. Chicken in a curry is cut small and then the curry is mixed with the rice and eaten with a spoon. Shepherds pie has to be mixed together before I will eat it.
Then some things can't touch. If I'm having spaghetti hoops with chips, say, the chips can't touch the hoops. If I'm using ketchup or mayo with my dinner it goes in a sauce dish and I will dip whatever into it but it can't go on my plate in case it touches the food.
Hot dogs and burgers have to go in a bun but sausages can be eaten on their own.
Haha. I didn't realise how weird this all sounds until I wrote it down. I don't think that's everything but just what came to mind.
Oh god, this is the thing that really tipped me off to being autistic in the first place.
I can't handle a lot of saucy/creamy textures. I can't eat sandwiches with condiments; no ketchup, mustard, mayo, any of that. Creamy soups are a no-go, but I make a (very hesitant) exception for grilled cheese dipped in tomato soup. Can't even dip my chicken nuggets in a sauce without gagging, so I just eat them plain or put some salt on it.
I can only take one or two bites of something overly sweet before getting over it.
The texture of most meats make me wince, ESPECIALLY like summer sausage with that weird outer shell. I gag. I would be a vegetarian if it weren't for pepperoni, bacon and chicken. I can tolerate ham, but anything else is a no-go.
In general, if I don't know the food, regardless of whether or not I like the taste and can handle the texture, I'll gag the first few times trying it. Because of that, my diet is just slightly more advanced than your average 5-year-old.
