Dr. Ritvo is far from incompetent, but making a diagnostic statement after two minutes of observation is pretty irresponsible.

I also suspect attitudes about seeking SSI may interfere with some people's ability to be objective.

mmm...

hi :)

i was trained to use the dsm at the graduate level in the course of my education, thats at university for my canadian friends ;) and theres a diagnostic problem with autism and it is the same with adhd. it was looked at from a perspective of children, not from a perspective of adults (notice that this doesnt stop 'experts' from diagnosing adults with adhd). the dsm is helpful in identifying what the hell is wrong with people in society. the reasons new disorders pop up and disorders change, is because the norm changes. point of fact, the norm is changing. one in eighty eight children are born with autism now. i know that the dsm and the apa cannot possibly keep up with the rapidly changing psychological norms, try as they may. so this dude could just be frustrated. think about it: he has dedicated his life to figuring something out and the target is moving. he wouldnt be a good scientist unless he believed in his hypothesis (i also worked in research for two years). when he gets proven wrong, he will change his thinking. until then, he is where he is at so he can continue to exist and do (mostly) good work. you probably yearn for the box, so you have a cohort, so you know what is what and who you are. this is natural. are you on the spectrum? lol. if you're not, then theres really something wrong with you :p that is to say, you are as dynamic as the wind and the dsm should have something similar to a software upgrade. how is it that the apps on my phone want to update every other day, but the dsm only needs a re-tool every decade or so? laughable...

You should ask the expert what causes Aspergers and what cure he proposes for the condition. Obviously he won’t have an answer because he’s not an expert.

If I gave a good description of how my friends arm was broken in an accident and told you where the break occurred, along with how much his arm weighed and the length of his forearm, it doesn’t make me an expert, not unless I help to fix’s the arm.

Why do people learn about what they see in the behaviour of others and call themselves an expert?

Autism was first observed by Doctors in the 1930s, until they come up real answers to the cause or a successful treatment of the condition, then they are still merely observers.
There are no experts when it comes to many mental conditions, only observers telling us what they can see and then calling themselves experts, whilst making a great pile of money in the mean while.

"Expert” I saw a shooting star last night, I guess that makes me an expert in Astronomy does it.

Ugh. That's almost as bad as the preacher who told me God had healed me of autism so that I could deal with my "perversion".

Wow.
