My vocabulary is as limited as a baby. But on the other hand, I see the future. I will live in impecunious conditions, as an artist living in penury. Suddenly out of the blue, I turned into a mendicant on the streets, begging for anything I can get. I am the most corpulent human on whatever planet this is. My brother is insouciant about everything by saying the awful saying, "it is what it is" the most uncaring thing ever. Here in the year 1812, things are anachronistic because there are actual functioning cars, electricity, computers but at the same time out here there are no human beings in sight. Technology takes longer to get out here. This year has been inauspicious to us, because of a certain problem which I ain't going into here but the other bad luck is my business and student loans. That is all for now. But my everyday vocabulary is no more than a few words said over and over again because of my deficient "intelligence" whatever that means. Oh my IQ is between 78-85 last time I checked. Man am I dumb!

I often pronounce words in unusual ways.

For example, I heard an acquaintance (a brilliant mathematician who most people in the US were unable to understand) pronounce the word "Himalayan" once. Instead of something like "HIM a LAY in" as I used to pronounce it, it is now "Him ALL yen" (with emphasis on the capitalized portions).

I never did like the way I learned to pronounce "Carribean" as "CARE a be in" and decided to change it to "ka RI be an" with the emphasis decreasing even more after the "be". It sounds so much more rhythmic and musical than the more common way that is just plain stilted. When I started pronouncing it that way, I had never heard anyone else say it the same way, but I hear it occasionally now. Of course, in the 60s and 70s, I hardly ever heard anyone say the word at all.

I know a lot of people who use long words to appear more intellectual but a recent study proves the opposite, people who can convey a message with simple words that everyone's able to understand appear more intellectual. Using esoteric vocabulary only frustrates people.

Its decent but thats cause Im in very academic, educated settings. I have a tendency to pick up difficult words when people around me are using it. I notice, I will use harder words or more formalized speech when other people are doing that. My friend loves to use hard words and its always good to bounce off any difficult uses of vocabulary with him. Otherwise, i can dumb down my speech if I need to. Yeah I know that wasnt the pt of this thread, lol.

Right now Im trying to learn a ton of GRE vocab, kinda ptless if ur applying to science programs. But whatever.

I used to have a very large vocabulary, but have over the years had to 'dumb down' my speech in order for people to understand what I say.

I think that my vocab is average. I used to have a big vocab but I guess I've lost it. My mom didn't like it when I used big words and would sometimes get mad at me when I did. So I've stopped using big words. i'm kinda upset with her that mad me stop but on the other hand I know I probably sounded a little strange at times. So now whenever I think of using fancy word I usually just you the simple one.

It's quite common for people to ask me to explain what I've previously stated in "layman's terms". I tend to have to consciously think of "simpler" words to use when conversing with others. I don't use the more "complex" words to sound more intelligent, I just use them because they happen to be the first words to enter my mind. Although, to be honest, I'm not sure if I have a "big" vocabulary or if they just happen to have "small" vocabularies.

In the 6th grade we took the ASVAB and I scored High School vocab. In High School I ASVAB-ed at college level..

As tested it's in the + 98th percentile range.

i have a vocabulary of 8192 words. my peripheral interface multiplexer can organize these
words into more than the amount of pertinent phrases that i will be inspired to utter in my lifetime.
--------------

actually, what i said above was a semi joke as if i was talking from the perspective of the b9 robot.

i think that words are simply the building blocks of structures (sentences) which are the scaffolding for a thought that one wishes to convey.
i do not use esoteric words often. i say what i say with the simplest words i can think of to build the sentences i say that i use to convey a thought i wish for my audience to understand quickly and without them having to disencrypt what i say.

a person who tries to tell the world of a revolutionary idea they had in words that only 5 % of people can understand, will get their message across to only 5% of the population, and ...
there is no guarantee they will agree.

i can see very many young men on WP who structure their words in a way that is obviously designed to impress, and i am repulsed to read what they say because i think they are just postulating themselves as superior rather than actually thinking about matters they are "talking" about in a non reactionary way.

another answer i was going to post was simply:
i can say "english".

the joke there is that i am not saying "i can speak english" but the only word i know is the word "english", and when someone asks me any question whatsoever, my answer will have to be the word"english"
so when someone asks what language i speak, i would have to say "english" since that is the only word i know to say back to them.
thank goodness that the the word "english" is a word in the english language. if it were not, then i would be speaking the only word i know to people who had no idea what it meant.

whatever. sorry for my post not being in the spirit of the thread, but i will still press "submitt" anyway.

I still use a "big" word sometimes, but I'm not as enthusiastic about vocabulary as I was when I was a kid. It's a little ironic, because I have a bigger vocabulary. I just don't care as much about what people think of me.

New things make me apprehensive, but not new vocabulary. My favorite word is the longest word with a meaning in the English language which is 28 letters long. Can you guess? Here's a hint. It's the separation of church and state.

The answer is antidisestablishmentarianism. How's that for a gigantic word. I enjoy a continuity of events as well as an endless cycle of the world or uniformitarianism. Don't get me angry or I'll defenestrate you. Tee Hee Hee :D

Pretty extensive for my age. People always think I'm showing off if I use a larger word than average.

I have people do this too.
I love using industry jargon, its one of those things that the person is either going to know exactly what your talking about or will have no clue.
