I was 16 when I was diagnosed in high school. I was on medication for anxiety and depression after losing all motivation for school and things I liked- for a year before the psychiatrist who specialized in ASD officially diagnosed me. He said he "suspected it a year earlier (when he first started seeing me) but wanted to be absolutely sure, because it is difficult to diagnose". I suspected I was different in a rather important way in middle school, but was not sure in what way or how much, other than not being able to keep friends, and learning math slowly. Since I became aware of other kids (in late elementary school) I thought social skills were optional, that it meant talking to friends...other than that, I was completely unaware of how much I am affected. I think it was in my first year of high school, for special interests that I read about autistic disorder in one book in the Special Needs section of my school's library....that I could really identify startlingly with a lot of the symptoms, but just not as severely with all the symptoms.
