Dumb things I've heard non-autistics say about autism

Here are some definitions for Autism that I found on Google Dictionary.

"A mental condition in which fantasy dominates over reality, as a symptom of schizophrenia and other disorders"

"An abnormal absorption with the self; marked by communication disorders and short attention span and inability to treat others as people"

"Autism is purely a lunatic as well as a semi-genetic disease. Hyper-activity is the primary symptom of autism which is followed as a genetic character to the following generation, thus, autism becomes the second generation genetic disease"

I don't know if everyone will agree that these are dumb things, but:

"If someone 'appears' less autistic they 'are' less autistic as autism is diagnosed on basis of observed behaviours."
"I'm not sure you understand that ASD's are not 'soft' diagnoses. They are severe and pervasive and do not 'hide'."

Another one from NTs is. You can't have Aspergers because you don't look ret*d or have a physical disability, another one is They can't see the disability so they do not believe you have it and they swear black and blue that your Normal and faking or pretending to have a disability.

You know what....
I learned in a Human Relations and Psychology class that Empathy is a "learned emotion"
so that means that NO ONE is born with it and it comes naturally for NO ONE regardless of Autism or not. So being neurotypical doesn't make you magically good at empathy... it's apparently a choice and a perspective.

...sadly from my husband, about our daughters after me describing the main traits to try to explain AS to him:

"well if that's what it is then it shouldn't be called a syndrome, it shouldn't exist".

I'm pretty sure we do lack empathy*. They've got physical evidence from brain imaging recently too to add to the evidence locker.

*It doesn't mean you can't be a nice, caring and compassionate person who has guilt and regret (these last two emotions seem to be intact in those with high functioning ASDs, which are the two important ones regarding whether someone is "bad" or not)

Well, I don't know what type of people you know, but no one has ever said me things like that (apart the stereotype that all autistics are good at Math). But that may be just because I talk about autism/AS out of my house very very little. Or maybe, it's because I mostly fit the stereotype.

Most recently I saw this statement made about Tink from The Guild (imo, probably the most NT character on that show). Apparently there's an idea going around that AS is basically synonymous with selfishness.

I was once told my Autism can't be that bad as I've just been diagnosed. Ignore the fact that I am female, who are meant to be harder to diagnose. Why would someone seek a diagnosis (of anything) if there it wasn't that bad? I've had people suggest since I was 14 that I probably have it.
