I like your analogy! I have a serious interest in scorpions.

Perhaps he's got to want to suppress his talkativeness and simply finds it more important to talk at a time when I'm somewhat weakened than give me a few moments. ouch.

But, yes, he's engaging conversation that I'm supposed to take interest in, and respond to when I get in from town.

That is so annoying. I have someone in my life who babbles on endlessly and insists that I comment. Fortunately I don't live with him.

He could just not be able to help himself. I wouldn't take it that he doesn't care.

Why can't you just unpack the shopping, then go straight to your bedroom and shut the door?

I wouldn't be able to tolerate living with such a person in the first place so the shopping problem wouldn't occur. I have been out with a 'babbler' in the past and once told them to stop talking so much while we were going round the supermarket, which he took offence at and said ok I won't say anything then but I meant it less in a literal way and more in a 'don't talk so much, I can't concentrate on what I'm doing' type way. Talkers can't understand this though. You can't change people so you have to either adapt to them or find someone else to live with/live alone.
