Although I am not perfect, correct spelling and grammar are very important to me. I hate seeing spelling/grammar mistakes and am highly embarrassed if I make them myself!
I have been like this since primary school. Not really sure why.

Hey everybody! I'm Andy, fairly new here.

I've been trawling through a lot of posts here for a while now, and it just struck me; compared to any other website/forum I've ever been on, the people on Wrong Planet have an unusually high level of spelling & grammar. Is this an aspie thing? I know I've always been very fussy about my spelling.

Is it a sign of our overall higher level of intelligence, or our stubborn perfectionist natures?

Just curious!

I'm articulate in my writing. I'm also a writer and editor by trade, so I like to use clear, precise language when I can. In my speech? Not so much. It's so frustrating when I can clearly express something in writing, but I stammer and occasionally border on incomprehensible when I try to explain something verbally.

I wouldn't say I've noticed people being more articulate here than on other (not AS/autism) forums I visit. Guess it mostly depends what you're comparing it to.

What I have noticed is that people often make very long posts here, especially post in which people describe their history or a recent situation. My own posts can get quite long. I wonder if we just have a lot to say when it comes to talking about things pertaining to autism, or whether we just have a tendency to write a lot.

I've been told my writing is quite articulate. I'm nowhere near as articulate when talking.
It does seem to me that it may be an aspie trait. On the other hand, I've seen some pretty bad grammar here every once in a while.

I find that if I even try to be less than (mostly) grammatically correct, my hands will rebel against me. I prefer reading text that is properly capitalized and punctuated. And let's not forget paragraph use. I can read 10 pages worth of text that has proper paragraphs faster than I can read one page of text that is just all in one big lump.

I do not think that I could have said it any better myself. :)

I've been here less than an hour and have seen about three spelling / typographical errors.
Even I will admit that is below average, though it is also less than ideal.
There are a few errors I correct systematically, but most I will let slide. Americanisations bother me somewhat too.
Admittedly, I also hold other Aut-Kin to higher standards than I do mundanes. The mundies have no psychological incentive to do such things correctly.

Mine got better after being in a position where someone relied on me to correct them on a near constant basis.
Two years of constantly having to proof-read someone else's writing dramatically improved my own, and simultaneously made me a "grammar nazi". I'm recovering. Slowly.

On the other hand, we do see very disappointing posts like http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt214837.html.

Yes, it's an aspie thing and is noted from kids at a young age.

It annoys me when it's not right.

I'm trying to write more posts to desensitise myself to the feeling of being criticised because I can often spend up to an hour on a post trying to make it perfect - I even refer to dictionaries to see if I'm using a common word correctly. I'm not sure how well I come across in writing, but my speaking is terrible; I usually stumble through a conversation.

Everything I write is quite formal, from email to Facebook messages.

This post took me about 15 minutes to write. I checked to see if Facebook has a capital B and I checked the definition of "reread". I've reread this post about ten times now.

Until recently I was a crazed perfectionist. I used to spend HOURS on certain emails to make sure they were perfect. It was probably part of my perfectionist/OC tendencies but mercifully I have learned to scale it back. I do find it ironic that supposedly 'disabled' people are the smartest, most articulate and nicest people on any message board I have been a part of.

I'm excessively articulate, approximately to the level of immaculacy; consequently, I consider myself "gifted" with the ability to express myself fluently or coherently, but this is limited to a formal or conservative setting (e.g. elaborating my topics of interest verbosely during a psychoanalytical assessment). It's considered to be incongruous during casual conversational settings as it may be interpreted as ostentatious, condescending and intellectually snobbish.

I have a lot of propensities (or proclivity in substitutional terms) to correct spelling/grammar errors, and demonstrate formalized sentence structures whilst I'm writing, from research essays to discussion forum messages - I have a rigorous adherence to being precisional as much as I can. In retrospect, lecturers and special education assistants have noticed my tendencies to alter one or other's spelling and grammar, not to mention that they felt neither disparaged or contented towards me doing so.

I also double check my grammar and punctuation prior to posting, hence how superiorly pedantic I really am - Nevertheless, it's an"Aspergian" thing.
