Do you constantly mishear lyrics too? I tend to either not notice them, forget them often and misinterpret the words.
I am the opposite way round. I analyse lyrics carefully and like to figure out what emotion the songwriter was feeling when they wrote the song, and exactly what the song is about. Other people often mishear lyrics and have totally wrong ideas about songs, and I have to correct them. I find it really funny that they listen to the words and sing along to them without actually stopping to think about what they really mean.
Examples: my sister was singing along to a Shania Twain song as though it went like this: "If you wanna touch her ass" and I heard her and had to correct her and tell her it actually goes like this: "If you wanna touch her, ask."
She didn't believe me at first. She was so used to singing it the wrong way. I had to go and show her the lyrics on the album cover and try to explain to her that the song was all about a lady advising men on how to be a gentleman. Also, it wouldn't make sense for a sentence to start with "if" and then not end with a verb.
My other sister was singing along to Norah Jones "I've got to see you again" and said to me wistfully: "I do like this song. Isn't it lovely? It's so romantic." I said in surprise: "no it isn't. It's rather sick and sad. It's all about someone who is infatuated with a stripper." My sister was very astonished and said: "no it isn't. What on earth makes you say it's about a stripper?" and I said in surprise: "don't you
listen to it?" My sister simply wouldn't believe me that the song was about a man who is infatuated with a poledancer, and I simply couldn't believe that she hadn't picked that up after listening to it billions of times.
Why do people not
listen to lyrics and notice what they are really about?
