I've known lots of typical kids (more boys) go through a phase of starting fires with their friends. My brother did at 14, and it burnt half our hedge away. My brother was so shook up that he never started a fire since.

I do like fire. It's interesting and beautiful. When I was a teenager, I lived in the basement and kept the wood furnace going; I used to get up at night and put in wood whenever it burned low.

However, I'm always very careful with fire because I know how easily it can spread. If I'm going to be playing with fire, I make absolutely sure there are no flammable materials anywhere nearby that I don't intend to burn, and I make sure I can grab a wet towel or something of the sort to put out a fire. Even a candle never gets left unattended. Outside, I get rid of nearby dry grass, and make sure to put a fire out completely before I leave. You know--the usual precautions. Fire is beautiful, but it can be deadly if you're not careful.
