There's no option for both? I wear really strong contacts because I can't see far, but when I have them on, it strains my vision when reading, so I have contacts AND reading glasses... sigh.

This might apply to most people... but just want to say:

I tried them because I was teased (same with some NTs I know) not really because of fashion. Also I wanted to be able to do certain things and still see, like showering, going underwater (I always needed goggles, so before it was either... glasses/can't open my yes, or goggles/everything is blurry), also when cooking, I'm the only one who doesn't cry when cutting onions!

Shortly after I tried them my vision got really bad and the high prescription causes the walls to bend in. I used to switch between glasses and contacts, but since that point I couldn't. The distorted view gave me a bad headache. I haven't had a pair of real glasses made in more than 5-6 years. 4 years ago I couldn't wear contacts during science experiments so I tried a slightly lower prescription so I could see, but the walls wouldn't bend in. But I never used them.

Strange thing about my vision problems. NOBODY in my family has ever had any as a child.

I've been wearing glasses since the 3rd grade for nearsightedness. It seems that I am now becoming farsighted as well. My current glasses are bifocals, but I notice that with my most recent pair I now have a dead zone where neither lens works, so the next pair will likely be trifocals. I have also considered getting glasses specifically for computer work, with the right single lens for that distance only, since trying to look at the monitor through the bottom lens most of my waking hours gives me neck and throat problems. Currently I have a large monitor and don't bother with the glasses while on the computer.

I have never tried contacts -- just doesn't seem practical or worth the bother. I have enough trouble with the glasses.

I've noticed most of the Aspies here wear glasses, as though it's more common in people with ASDs, especially those under 40. In the general population it is more common for people over 40 or 45 or whatever to wear glasses, but there seems to be more younger Aspies that permanently wear glasses than the majority of non-Aspies. This isn't just Aspies - I've seen lots of young people with Down's Syndrome wear glasses too.

I wonder why people with disabilities are more likely to wear glasses? I don't wear glasses by the way.

Glasses has a large majority over contacts. I prefer to wear contacts, not because of any visual trying to look good but because I don't like glasses on my face. I can feel them and its not a good feeling

I am almost completely blind in my right eye, so I need them. My left eye is almost perfect, however.

I take them off when I read and when I look at a computer screen. My up-close vision is great, so I've heard.

There should be an option: "I used to wear glasses." I got LASIK a few years ago.

I wore glasses during my teenage years, and it was living hell because I could never tolerate something on my nose.

Yes, I wear glasses. However, wearing glasses has nothing to do with AS: in my family, even the ones who are NTs wear glasses; it's a genetical thing.

I wear glasses, but I also know plenty of people on the spectrum who do not.

There is no correlation with glasses and ASDs, I know plenty of NTs that wear them too. But it just seems that loads of members here wear glasses, and every Aspie I have met (in real life and on the TV) wear glasses, as though there is a higher ratio of Aspies/Autistics wearing glasses than NTs (although glasses is not uncommon in NTs).

I've always wanted to know why.

It's surprising to see how many people use contacts, or would consider it.

Just the idea makes me cringe. I know people do it, but I could never.

On the other hand I don't like the feeling of wearing glasses, either, so I don't usually wear them. I try to keep my glasses in the car for driving in unfamiliar areas, &/or low-visibility weather, &/or dark of night.

In general, it's OK with me for the distance to be mostly a blur, unless I need to see it for safety reasons. I didn't get glasses until I was in my late 20s, so I'm used to the world going by in a blur. For a while I had bifocals, but despite the optometrist's opinion, I really don't need glasses to read. And it was annoying to have to peer around that big chunk of distortion in the middle of my glasses (the second lens) when I was trying to drive.

Keep your onions in the refrigerator or at least put them in the refrigerator two or three hours before you are going to cut them.

Onions at room temperature bother me quite a bit, but when cooled down in the refrigerator, they don't bother me at all. I almost forget how much trouble is had by people who insist on cutting onions at room temperature.

Ok, I want to know HOW other aspies/ASD's can STAND to wear glasses given our universal sensitivity issues? For me, I can't stand to have something cold and metal (however light) resting on my noes. And no matter how well adjusted they are, I can sense even the most subtle ways in which glasses are off balance.

A lot of the adjustment and improvement in my observational abilities that could have happened during my teenage years didn't happen because having to wear glasses was such a huge distraction. I got rid of my glasses 5 years ago (switched to contacts, then LASIK), but unfortunately, a lot of the habits I have like not paying attention to details in my environment or other people were made worse--and ingrained-- by the painful, aggravating distraction of glasses. Though my social improvement from 21-24 was probably the biggest jump in a 3-year period ever.

Anyone else with this problem? Anyone else think, like me, that wearing glasses has made some of your aspie social problems worse?

I was short sighted and would still be if I hadn't had my eyes lasered about 9 years ago, apart from the smell of the burning eyeflesh, the main disadvantage is a lost my microscopic near vision and now must wear reading glasses for very fine print.

There should be a "sometimes" option. I have hyperopia, though can still read without glasses on (just not for very long, so I keep them on when I expect to be doing a lot of reading)
