A prayer I said this morning as I led worship in Scotland, after lighting a candle for those who died in Newtown. Memories of the Dunblane shootings have been brought close to us, with the repetition of that horror.
We never know what each new day will bring. We hope for joy and peace, or at least the comfort of predictable routine.
We're never prepared for the intrusion of evil, acted out through harm and mayhem.
When death rips life from our grasp, when horror blurs our sight, have mercy on us, Lord.
We pray for the people of Newtown in Connecticut, we hold in our hearts the people of Dunblane, for whom this is a reminder of a past horror, we reach out with your comfort to all who endure violent loss and disruption of life.
Hold their aching souls, compassionate God, guide them through dizzying grief, listen to their anguished, “why?”
Be the comfort we may not even know we need as we live through this brand new mourning. Amen.
