Do you have any feelings about your parents and other adults for their "joke?"

Not really. I think they expected me to grow out of it sooner than I did, as we had a bit of a talk one year. When they told me, it made sense.

I was at least 11, possibly older.

Don't most parents make their kids believe in Father Christmas?

My parents did, and so did all the teachers at school. I don't know what the average age is for growing out of believing all the ''magic'' that goes with Christmas, but I realised he wasn't real when I was 9, in about the summertime. By the following Christmas, I think my mum figured I didn't believe in Father Christmas any more, but nobody said nothing, and I didn't care anyway, I was just excited of getting my presents. It really wasn't a big deal in our house when me and my brother (in turn) figured out that Father Christmas wasn't real. Some kids get told properly by their parents when they reach a certain age, and then they get mad or upset, but that didn't happen in our house.

I believed in Father Christmas from when I was about 2 and a half to when I was 9, so my 8th Christmas was my last Christmas of believing in all of that. But Christmas was still magical and exciting, but that kind of fizzled out when I got to about 13 or 14.

I stopped believing as soon as I entered school.

I couldn't get the concept of how Santa could get in a 978 square foot apartment with nothing but a small furnace in it.

So one fairy-tale for another?

I'm also a Christian.

I don't recall ever believing in Santa. We just didn't do that in our family. Sure we knew about the tradition, but we weren't taught to believe in Santa. We still had a neighbor dress up a few years as Santa when we were little and had pictures with him or the mall Santa. And occasionally there'd be a present under the tree that said 'from Santa' which was usually from one of the Grandparents.

To me it was always just a story. My dad seemed to think it important that we knew our gifts came from our parents. I was once ostracised from a group of kids in school when I told someone who believed in Santa that he wasn't real.

I wouldn't do that now, I think it does no harm for a child to believe when they're young. But it's probably better to know it's a story and one that has metaphorical meaning, that we can all be Santa in some way, such as by doing kind things without anyone needing to know it was us.

To me the stories about Santa were more fun without the belief. There was no fear of oooh, I'd better be good or I'll get coal. I don't like those kinds of guilt trips, and I've always loved a fun story. :)

They always tried to, but I am not sure if I ever fell for it. I remember stumbling upon them downstairs with the stockings on more than one occasion after going to get a drink of water.

Believed in Santa 'till I was about either 9 or 10. Found out he wasn't real because I found the containers of our presents from Santa in a trashbag (or maybe it was my brother who found it).

It was so much fun and now it's just not the same. :(

I don't like to call it tricking. I'd rather refer to it as sharing the magic of Santa. :santa:

My God, it's like a reflex for some atheists.

Yes, I was tricked. One Christmas family members even came in and put presents under the tree and made noise and made sure I was woken up. I didn't stop believing until I was told.

I had never expected that the adults in my family would lie to me. I was so mad about it.
