Don't forget that people looking at you does not necessarily mean they are doing this because they think of you as strange.
I look at people because they are different and interesting. And when I see people in a wheelchair I want to check if they need help.
It's just all about trying to figure out if that one in front of you is hostile or not. After that look, it's all about how you react to it. If you run away in fear, you have something to hide and so they distrust you. If you just say you felt like that (or in the case of laying in the yard perhaps something like "I wanted to watch the clouds") they won't think of you as strange, at least not in a negative way.
